Two Roommates Stab Each Other Over Android & iPhone Argument

Apr 17, 2015 - 9:04 AM - by dgstorm

The internet is awash in trolls who lurk in comment sections of blogs ready to jump down each other's throats to "debate" (and debase each other) over Android vs. iPhone. This latest news report coming out of Tulsa, Oklahoma may have just found the two "Idiot Kings" of this behavior.

Two roommates in the Evergreen Apartments were taken to the hospital after stabbing each other over an argument as to which mobile platform was better than the other. The altercation occurred at 1am on Friday morning and devolved into smashing beer bottles on each other and then stabbing each other repeatedly.

Both of the boneheads survived and were treated for their wounds. Police have not yet decided whether they will charge either mobile gladiator. Perhaps they were lucky there wasn't a third roommate who was a Windows Phone user... all three might have ended up with posthumous Darwin awards.

Let this be a lesson folks... it's fine to have a favorite technology, but there's room enough in this world to like multiple platforms, and arguments can obviously be taken way too far. Just remember, if we didn't have the competition between Apple, Google, Microsoft & others, then smartphones likely wouldn't have evolved so quickly and given us such amazing capabilities!

Microsoft Office Preview is Now Available for Android Tablets on the Google Play Stor

Jan 06, 2015 - 4:11 PM - by dgstorm

Microsoft made good on their promise to bring Office to Android tablets. They just made the Office Preview available for Android tablets and you can get it at the Google Play Store. This "Preview" version is basically like an extended "beta" test, although most of the kinks have already been worked out. The program is designed to get feedback from users so Microsoft can improve upon the Android tablet version of Office.

There are a few limitations worth considering before trying out this Office Preview. Here's a quote from Microsoft's blog with the full details,

In November, we invited you to sign up for the Office for Android tablet preview. With such an overwhelmingly positive response from people around the world, we made it even easier for customers to download the preview apps by requesting access to the Google Plus community.

Over the last two months, we have heard from people all over the world who want the power of Office on their Android tablet. The feedback we’ve received through this initial phase of preview has helped us shape and optimize the Office experience for Android tablet users. Your feedback also helps us plan and prioritize future feature updates.

Today, we are excited to announce that we are further expanding the preview. We want more feedback from more users to ensure that Office apps work well on a range of different Android tablets before launching the official apps. To participate in the preview, you can use an ARM-based Android tablet running KitKat or Lollipop, with a screen size between 7″ and 10.1″. Starting today, anyone can go to Google Play and download the Word, Excel and PowerPoint preview apps. No waitlist. No requesting access. Just go and download the apps!

We hope you will join the preview and tell us what you think. Your feedback is critical in helping us deliver world-class Office applications to Android tablets. Download the Word, Excel andPowerPoint preview apps for your Android tablet today and tell us what you think in our Google Plus community.
Finally, keep in mind that the "preview" versions of Office are actually broken up into Office's constituent parts. Word, Excel &... [Read More]

New 2-in-1s - Asus Transformer Book Chi models

Jan 05, 2015 - 2:58 PM - by azazel1024
Asus announced the T300 Chi, T100 Chi and T90 Chi at CES today.

AnandTech | Asus CES 2015 Press Conference Live Blog

The T90 looks interesting as does the T300, especially their prices.

However, I am saddened by the T100 Chi. It looks like an overall nice replacement for the T100 (I assume it has a Cherry Trail processor in it), but 2GB of RAM...you are KILLING me. Really, really, really these things need 4GB. 2GB is okay, but with even more CPU and GPU ability, that 2GB becomes that much more of a bottle neck.

Makes me really hope Asus gets smart and releases a 4GB option at some point, because otherwise I suspect there will be a lot of tablet makers who introduce Cherry Trail models with 4GB of RAM.

That said, thinner, 16:10 and 1200p and $399...yeah, I'll probably buy one once I have the spare funds (maybe birthday present to myself this spring?)

Asus Announces Zenfone Zoom Smartphone w/ 3X Optical Zoom 13MP Camera

Jan 05, 2015 - 1:48 PM - by dgstorm

It looks like Asus is wanting to take the camera optics of smartphones to a whole new level. They just unveiled their latest creation at CES 2015, and this smartphone has a monster camera! It's called the Zenfone Zoom and it includes a 13MP camera that also has a built-in 3x Optical Zoom lens. Here's the scoop on all of the specs:
  • 13MP shooter with 3X optical zoom (and 12X digital zoom) - with laser auto focus and optical image stabilization
  • 5MP front facing camera
  • 5.5-inch (1080×1920 resolution) IPS display on Gorilla Glass 3
  • Android 5.0 Lollipop and Asus's Zen UI enhancements
  • 802.11 ac WiFi compatibility and storage options ranging up to 128GB
  • At its thinnest point, the Zenfone Zoom measures at just 11.95mm
  • Full dimensions complete at 158.9 x 78.84 x 11.95 mm and weighs in at 185 grams
  • LTE
  • 3,000mAh battery

Asus claims this is the world's thinnest smartphone with a 3x Optical Zoom Lens. That's probably true, since you can probably count on one hand the other smartphones with lenses of that size, and none of them were very thin.

The phone will officially launch in Q2 2015 with prices starting at $399 and up. No specific region availability has been revealed. What do you guys think? Could Asus have found a winner for folks who want the camera in their smartphone to stand out?

NVIDIA Officially Unveils New Tegra X1 Mobile CPU With 256-Core Maxwell Architecture

Jan 05, 2015 - 9:35 AM - by dgstorm

NVIDIA is taking mobile tech to a whole other level with their latest creation. The Tegra K1 was already famous for its breathtaking performance, but the brand new Tegra X1 is set to blow it out of the skies. According to NVIDIA's announcement, the new Tegra X1 mobile is based upon their desktop "Maxwell architecture deployed in the world’s top gaming graphics cards."

NVIDIA also claims the Tegra X1 “packs a full teraflop of computing power into a slice of silicon no bigger than a thumbnail.” The chip, which is packed with 8 cores on the CPU and 256 cores for the GPU, is supposedly twice as fast as the K1. Here's a quick breakdown of architectural specs for the Tegra X1:
  • 256-core Maxwell GPU
  • 8 64-bit CPU cores (4x ARM Cortex A57 + 4x ARM Cortex A53)
  • 60 fps 4K video (H.265, H.264, VP9)
  • 1.3 gigapixel of camera throughput
  • 20nm process

NVIDIA plans to use this mobile super-chip in more than just tablets. It looks like it was designed to handle a number of different applications including NVIDIA DRIVE CX which is meant for high-powered in-car infotainment systems, and NVIDIA DRIVE PX, which is meant to power up self-driving cars.

The most surprising thing about this monster processor is that it is supposedly just as power efficient as the previous generation! Incredible! We have the full official press release in the thread below.
