    Charge through USB

    Hi all,

I am new to the forum and also new to the tablet scene. I just tried plugging my TF201 to the laptop via USB. The tablet is detected as a storage device but it does not charge. Is it designed to be like this or is it a fault? Is the laptop's USB plug not capable of charging the TF201?

Another issue I found is that when it runs out of battery and I plug it into the wall charger, the charging LED's light up but the tablet won't turn on. I keep holding the power button and it just won't start. I was almost putting it back into its box and returning it when it finally booted. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

    Thanks in advance.

    Best regards,

    Mauricio Ramalho

    Welcome to the forum Mauricio

Your Transformer will really only charge if you use the charger it came with. It outputs at a higher voltage than your USB pots or other similar looking chargers.

On the power up, not sure what happened but I do hope you charged it with the TF charger for the recommended 8 hours. I would just keep an eye on it for now.

    Welcome to the forum!

As leeshor pointed out, the TF uses a non-standard voltage to charge. If you read the fine print on the charger, it outputs 15 VDC @ 1.2 Amps to charge the TF. Using a standard USB it is only 5 VDC @ 0.5 Amps.

I did some testing on the TF101 and with the wall wart & screen off, charge rate is around 35% per hour. Doing the same with a USB port it is 3% per hour.

Also, when you run the battery flat, it takes about 10 minutes or so before the device turns back on. THe same thing happens with an iPad or iPhone when you run them flat. They charge up to about 5-10% before turning on to help make sure they do not get caught in a reboot cycle where it kills the battery when trying to reboot.

    Hi leeshor,

Thanks for the answer, now it makes sense. As for the power up after complete discharge, I found the answer in this FAQ:

Apparently it is the normal behaviour
