Then I looked around the opened can :
    - Wi-Fi, GPS : No visible connection anomaly. I tried to tape some aluminum foil inside, on the WLAN connector, but no effect.
    - Tape connector : the picture below shows a double tape . I found the upper one totally out of the small white connection socket. Did I remove it accidentally while opening the can ? Anyway I plugged it back in and secured them both with a tape as well. I have no idea what they are for.

Finally, I put the screen back in place by pressing gently all around, and closed the sliding latches back.

The good news : everything works fine again :-)
The bad news : we have now 2 working fine tablets - the new memo pad fhd 10 for me, the repaired TF201 for my wife.... and I have no excuse anymore for needing to buy the upcoming TF701... :-(

Lately I have read many forums to try and fix the constant WiFi problems with the TF201. It was not in vain.

One post helped me out in solving the issue, but unfortunately I couldn't find it again to put the link here. The guy was referring to potential incompatibility with 802.11g in Android Jelly Bean and suggested 802.11n would work properly. I'm using a D-Link DWA-160 USB adapter in Windows 7 to make a hotspot for my tablet. I managed to permanently fix all WiFi issues at home by following these easy steps.

    1. Open Device Manager.

    2. Go to DWA-160 properties (or whichever device you use to broadcast).

    3. Go to Advanced tab.

    4. Change standard from Auto/bgn to 802.11n.

Works flawlessly with 4 bars since then, and WiFi Analyzer has shown a definitive 40-60 dBm increase in signal strength. If you're connecting to a router you need to access it's web interface instead and change to 802.11n from there. Of course, keep in mind this won't help when connecting to problematic networks where you can't change the settings. But enjoying stable WiFi at home is enough for me to appreciate. I hope this helps someone somewhere!

Thank you for this post! I have an Asus laptop, not a tablet. Does anyone know if this trick will work for an Asus laptop? If so, where should I place the tin foil? Thanks!

I think it's very unlikely to help a laptop. The TF201problem is a very special case. The body is metal, and the antenna is placed just so that a piece of foil is able to interfere with and enhance the electromagnetic sensitivity. If the antenna and case body had been slightly farther or closer it may not have worked at all.

As a minimum you'll have to establish a few things:
    - Is the laptop body fully metal? It's not very common. The source of theTF201 problem is there. The TF700 fixed it by replacing the body part over the antenna with plastic.
    - If yes, where is the antenna?
    - If there really is a possibility that the antenna sensitivity is attenuated by a metal body over it then you could try to just pass some tinfoil over the spot and see if something happens. NB: you'll need a dynamic realtime wifi monitoring application. Watching bars is not good enough.
    It's still unlikely though..

Would a piece of aluminum tape used to seal pipes work for a more permanent solution?
