Tethering an Android Tablet to an Android phone without Rooting "your phone"

    Step 1:
    Go to the Android Market

    Step 2:
Download PDAnet Tablet on your Tablet and your phone

    Step 3:
When you open up PDAnet Tablet on your phone, You will be asked whether you want the phone to be the Server or the Client.

    - You will choose "Server" for The Phone; The Phone will then ask you if it can broadcast your bluetooth signal and become discoverable for 120 seconds, accept this.

-- You will choose "Client" for The Tablet; The Tablet will ask you to Set The Network proxy, This will now involve step 4.

    Step 4:
Make sure your bluetooth is turned on.

    - You will press Set up Network Proxy, the following is what you will need to enter:

    Hostname:
    127.0.0.1
    Port:
    1234

    --Now Save

    Step 5:
On the Tablet's PDAnet tablet screen where it says Tap to discover, do as it says; your phone should pop up, select your phone and your connected.

--You should now see a screen on your phone saying connected!

***MAKE SURE TO DO THE FOLLOWING STEP BEFORE EXITING THE APP***

When you are done, and before disconnecting from you phone you will need to follow these steps.

    Step 1:
On the Tablet's PDAnet screen press "clear network proxy"
--- Do this, or you will be unable to load the Android Market, or download anything from the browser.
---- It will bring you back to the Proxy configuration screen, and you will clear the settings

    Step 2:
    Exit the app

    Conclusion:

With all that being said, this has to be done everytime you want to connect to the phone "without beeing rooted", I know its a pain, but its worth it if you're on the go and only have a phone.

    *********DISCLAIMER**********

Make sure to delete any PDAnet apps on your phone before bringing it into your Carrier; especially Verizon, they dont likey.

    UK SPECIFIC COMMENT
While I would thank the OP for this really helpful post, Any UK tf101 or tf201 owners reading this should note that using this solution may well NOT be necessary for you. There are many android handsets & operators in the UK that will provide a system option to provide wifi hotspot tethering without using this app. The wifi tethering option that comes as standard in android nowadays is frequently retained in UK handsets. It would appear that this may not be the case in the USA. Janner43 - UK based moderator

You don't need either to be rooted if you have a HTC phone as most will act as a WIFI hotspot. My HTC Desire and Asus TF work well together using totally stock features.

    Do you pay for tethering?

This applies to people who don't have the option of tethering through their carrier

Fair comment. No, I don't pay for tethering. I'm also still on a unlimited data package with my carrier (02 UK) which they've since stopped offering. Happy days!

    Thats excellent,

I wish companies would stop trying to make people pay for tethering. Its already costs an Arm and a Leg to have an Unlimited Data Plan.

    Talk about caring for customers.

I know on my galaxy nexus widgets that enable wifi hotspot will work without a special tethering plan. Otherwise through settings it checks a subscription. I think I use portable wifi hotspot but others with a wifi hotspot toggle widget work as well. I hope they dont fix that!

I am sending this using the tether from my phone right now.

After you paired it, did you go into the setting for that pairing (tap the spanner wrench) on the tablet and tick the "Use for Internet" box?
