New Wireless router or extender?

I moved my cheap Costco router from the basement to the main floor. Connection is fine in the room, but it's very weak on the 2nd floor and I get nothing outside. Not sure if I should buy a new router or some kind of extender or an access point.

I have no access to add new wiring on the 2nd floor. Whatever I get goes in the basement or main floor.

What are others using?

I've seen options close to $200. I'd prefer to do it cheaper, but it needs to work.

Thanks for any feedback. I'm in Canada near Toronto if that matters.

There is a product call TP-Link model TL-702N for about $40 US that will act as a repeater/extender. ASUS also has a product WL-330N3G that is a little more expensive but does the same thing. Either will do what you need.

This is of course the US Amazon, but read the reviews and see if anything will work in your situation
Most seem to be well under $100US

Some routers have a spot for a screw on antenna this will boost the range, check yours to see if it has one

I'm thinking of getting a repeater too so that I can use my TFP out on the patio, which is some 30-40 feet away from the router, up half a story all the way on the other side of our brick house and through a metal security screen door. In the research I have done, I read that a repeater would affect signal strength. Anybody want to weigh in on this? What has your experience been? My thought is that even if it decreased the signal that reaches the patio, it's still stronger than none.

It should work just fine. Just set up the repeater with the same credentials, place it so that it still can pick up the other signal and just boost it up and you should be golden.

Stupid simple setup, pressed the auto configuration button and it was good to go. Now I see two of my networks in wifi analyzer.

I finally ordered something. I decided to get the Amped R10000G (Amped Wireless R10000G High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Router) It's supposed to give me 10,000 sq ft of coverage. It was cheaper then the Amped R10000 extender which is the same thing except an extender. I hope it works ok. Should be arriving early next week. Was over my budget, but I hope it works as advertised.

This thread actually hurts me. Talk of needing a " repeater" for 30' or so? Every N device I own except the 201 works well over 100' from my nearest AP. I have o install an ap out in the yard to get ANY signal. And using the on screen keyboard I can't change that "o" to a " to".
