Just sharing my thoughts just for fun. Haven't looked at your Dropbox links so this may be irrelevant. I should also preface this with the fact that my freshman engineering knowledge only allows me to make wild guesses and I have no qualifications to back up my hypothesis.

I have a 47watt Asus notebook and experience somewhat of a faint (yet detectable) static when not playing audio. There is also a large crackle heard every time the computer powers up.

What I am guessing is that either the audio jack, or the entire audio DSP isn't completely isolated on the motherboard. You hear static based on the amount of power going through the motherboard and that is somehow "leaking" out the audio connection.

Depending in the fidelity? (I'm not an audiophile either ) of the headphones used the the amount that is actually played through the speakers could vary explaining partially why Asus couldn't reproduce the problem with their headphones (presumably cheap ones)

@GT, good to hear from you!

On your notebook, I'd guess you have power supply problems. Perhaps the magic smoke got out of a capacitor? That's still way too common. At least they aren't made of tinfoil and paper and beeswax anymore!

Well I moved back to school this week and waiting for classes to start again so figures I'd take a crack at some of these posts.

I went and checked out my machine last night and found to my surprise that the "noise" no longer happens. Guess that problem's solved.
