    Dock problem...

Two tabs, each about 1cm square have broken off the dock hinge on my 701. The tablet now
won't connect up with the keyboard and is loose and floppy in the hinge. Can anyone let me know the part number so I can replace the broken part please?

Lots of luck with that one. You might try contacting Asus, but their support for the TF line is, well, less than stellar. Your best bet is to look for a new or refurb dock if you really need one, or get a Bluetooth keyboard if that'll do. You aren't alone having problems with the 701 dock, so unless you need the extra battery and the USB port and/or card reader simultaneously I'd recommend a different solution. Asus makes an "extension kit" for the Vivo Tab that works with the 701, consisting of a USB-OTG adapter and a standard card reader; one could couple a wired keyboard that had a built-in USB hub to that. The only potential problem I'd see with that would be that you couldn't charge it and use the accessories at the same time. That would still give you 3-4 hours work time to a charge, though, which is more time than I want to spend hunched over a tablet.

IF the problem is just the retaining pins you can try this trick: Broken Dock mechanism - plastic retaining pins snapped off: POLL Are you affected?
Has worked for me for more than 2 years...'

But if you mean the KB is not getting to the tablet at all that won't help since probably the port is shot too. Find a used one on ebay. Not worth even attempting a repair imho

If I read the OP right, it's the two latches on the dock itself that are snapped off, not the part of the tablet they grab. That's the only part of my dock that's ~1cm square. It looks the same as the ones on my 300 dock and my 700 dock, but I'll still bet it's not available as a separate part. And you're right, the connector is probably also kaput, which means you're right again--not worth attempting to repair.

The bits that have broken fit around and next to the two metal latches which are operated by the sliding switch on the dock. As far as I can see nothing has broken on the tablet. I'm currently using the charging cable to recharge the tablet battery but it never occurred to me that the same cable could be used to attach a USB drive. Is this possible or am I getting hold of the wrong end of the stick?

Yup, the data/charge cable is just a passive cable, you need a USB-OTG adapter with an active chip to talk to an external drive. Either the standalone adapter, just a dongle really, or the one built into the keyboard dock. AFAIK those are the only two options for the 701. Again, the problem I see with the standalone unit is that you cannot charge while using it, so if you want or need that ability your best bet is still a used or refurb keyboard dock. Of course it has a card reader built-in also, and the extra battery power is always nice. Oh and did I mention the keyboard dock has a keyboard? Anyway I wouldn't waste much more time on a vain attempt to repair your old dock.

A small chisel, carefully inserted from the side, and a medium-large hammer.
