When you guys/gals are factory reseting, are you holding the volume up and power button and doing the reset from that method? I have found that removes the heavy android battery consumption that GSAM and other power monitors show.

As a reference analogy, I decided to leave my upgraded Galaxy SIV off the charger and had the same battery consumption pattern we are seeing on the asus. As I am in the middle of a 66GB music sync from Google Play, I won't have the results from an over night burn until that is finished; however, I am confident that it won't be there as I have seen this pattern numerous times.

    Update on battery drain issue:

I changed 2 things last night before I let my tablet sleep directly after charging to full.

    1) I removed all widgets from my home screen.
    2) I restarted the tablet and only started GSAM before I put it to sleep again.

    The results:

After 8 Hours the tablet went from FULL to 98%, using only 2%!

    2.4% Screen
    81.0% Wifi
    8.4% Kernel (Android OS)
    3.6% Android System
    1.5% AquaMail
    1.1% System (ndroid.systemui)
    0.6% GSAM Battery Monitor

    Everything else was under 0.5%.

After some searching on the net I found tons of bug reports for 4.4.2 from reported by various brands. The main issues in 4.4.2 cited by Google themselves were with Skype and Google Play Services causing some crazy battery draw (and potentially any app that accesses the camera) and an issue with apps not restarting properly when 'killed' or swiped away in the Recent Apps window. Their suggestions in those cases were to uninstall Skype/Camera apps and to uninstall updates to Google Play Services, however that latter would cripple many existing apps. It is also recommended not to use any app killer or to swipe away recent apps unless absolutely necessary.

One of the widgets I had on my home screen was, in-fact, the Tasks widget. I used it AND the Recent Tasks window religiously to kill tasks to free ram for the next task I was about to run. This may also have been part of my problem and why others have not experienced it.

I'm going to run the tablet today with my normal use without killing tasks or using recent apps to close them and see how that fairs.

I would be very interested in CM11 and it fixing any issues. I do own a dock. I have rooted and installed CM11 on a TF300, but it wasn't under warranty any longer. My 701 is new and was hoping to have a warranty for a bit before I needed to "nerd it out." Also haven't found step by step with the two files you mentioned. Seen them in a video but wanted to make sure I don't screw it up. Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Gary

No, still using 4.4.2 trying to hash out what causes the battery drain before resorting to flashing another OS.

To Unlock and then install custom recovery I used the YouTube video below:

It's not simple to follow because he has issues getting it to work. For easiest reference, I would suggest you skip immediately to 9 minutes and 35 seconds into the video where he tells you how to download SuperSU onto your tablet and do that FIRST. Then follow the video from the START until exactly 5 minutes in. Next make sure you press volume up on RCK then skip to 11 minutes 14 seconds in and follow the directions to install the SuperSU zip file. After that skip to 6 minutes and 15 seconds and get ES File Explorer, grant it root, then delete the 2 files he reports need it. Lastly, re-flash the recovery image one more time and it will stick.

If he would have taken the time to re-order the video in this manner it wouldn't be such a mess.

Daq of the day...is installing SU files the same thing as rooting? Or is this something in addition to root?

If you install it via the zip through the recovery it is the same as rooting. If you just install SuperSU app inside the OS you will have further steps needed to get the library installed.

So does towel root do both? I'm trying to clarify my own understanding. So it sounds like there are 2 steps to unlocking any android device..#1 some coding trickery to unlock it. #2. Actually installing SU software so you can actually be granted elevated account rights and thus have total control over the OS? Thanks in advance anyone for explaining it

You guys are getting off topic. There are several threads on the forum about the subject of rooting. This one is about the KitKat Update, not rooting or custom Roms.

Stay on topic and take those discussions to the appropriate thread(s) -- Try a forum search for example:

    Google search --- rooting TF701 site:transformerforums.com

Thank you very much. Agree, looked a little like ground hog day with the recovery redos. I watched it as well. Today I did a system reset will see how that does with my issues. I was having difficulty installing some software and that seems to be better after reset. Will look at the power issues. Will see how long before I get brave enough to root it. Thanks again.
