Unlocked TF701 - can't get adb etc to talk to tablet - is it a Windows 10 issue ?

    Hello.

    First time poster...long time reader.

    I have a fairly new(ish) TF701.

    Running Android 4.4.2

Upon boot it tells me that it's unlocked (I unlocked it yesterday)

    With ASUS 11.4.1.29-20141218 bootloader

The issue is that I can't get minimal adb and fastboot (on win10) to see the tablet.

I can adb devices and it just says unauthorized - no matter how many times I adb devices - it never authorizes.

Anyone have *any* ideas how I can get into this thing and load a custom recovery so I can put a ROM on it ?

    Thanks !

    Dan

You have to run Windows as admin. Are you?

    Thanks for that - forgot.

Now - when right clicking and running "Minimal adb and fastboot" as administrator when I "adb devices" instead of "unauthorized device" I do get a "DA0KCY122774 device" reply.

Then I run a "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" (recovery.img is a file in the directory) and "<waiting for any device>" stalls until I end the terminal (waited at least 5 minutes).

Next - I try to run a "adb reboot bootloader" command.

That reboots the tablet into the stock bootloader.

Now I run "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"

back to <waiting for any device>

After approximately 1 minute it fails out to:

    "target didn't report max-download-size
    sending 'recovery' (7044 KB)...
FAILED (command write failed (No error))
    finished. total time: 0.004s"

I feel like I'm getting -somewhere- at least...

My rooting skills are rusty. The last thing I rooted was a Droid Incredible

You are mixing up adb and fastboot.
You use adb when the tablet is booted into Android or a custom recovery like TWRP.
You use fastboot when the tablet is booted into the bootloader.
Run: fastboot devices to test the fastboot connection
Run: adb devices to test the adb connection. The return you get is encouraging.
Check the Beginners Guide linked in my signature to remind yourself.

    Ugh...

Okay - so I went through the Beginners guide.

    Everything went well...

Again...I feel like I'm 95% there. I installed the "[TOOL] [WINDOWS] ADB, Fastboot and Drivers - 15 seconds ADB Installer v1.1 - xda-developers"

    Things went swimmingly..

I can run adb and it sees the tablet.

I can run "fastboot devices" and I can see the tablet..

When I run the :fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery twrp.img"

Even under an elevated (administrator) command prompt...it just stalls...just sits there...nothing is happening on the tablet..and it never times out...it just sits...cursor a flashin'....

I've tried (2) different img files.

What about "fastboot reboot" or "fastboot reboot bootloader" or was it "fastboot reboot-bootloader"? Can't remember right now - it's late...
Drop the -i 0x0b05, it's just the vendor ID and not necessary.
Also try fastboot flash staging twrp.img. If that is successful reboot the tablet. Whatever is in the staging partition will be flashed to it's proper partition on the next boot.
I assume you have renamed the recovery file correctly, Explorer shows you extensions so you did not name it twrp.img.img etc....

But it looks suspiciously like a Windows quirk... Try rebooting both machines, use a different USB port, if you have anti virus installed disconnect from the Web and disable firewall and anti virus software temporarily.

    Success !!

Thanks for all your help - I have successfully booted into recovery (TWRP).

Did a full wipe (from TWRP).

    Currently installing the:

    ROM: KatKiss-7.1_TF701T_027
    SuperSU: SR5-SuperSU-v2.82-SR5-20171001224502
    gapps: open_gapps-arm-7.1-stock-20180125
    Wipe Dalvik/Cache

    It's rebooting now....taking a while...but so far so good.

    Thanks again !

    edit: (good news bad news)

Google play Services keeps crashing, set up email (Gmail) crashes - says "Google Play services keeps stopping"

    Play store crashes.

I turned on the wifi as I was setting up the language in the initial startup screen...but it kept crashing then also - so I chose the restore from another device as I had my Galaxy S7 sitting right here. That seemed to get things going..

Unfortunately I have this Google issue.

Due to issues I just decided to bin Nougatella and go with Katshmallow.

    Things are working well.

    edit:

With help over at XDA I got it sorted.

Back to Nougatella - running fine on opengapps - pico.

    Thanks for all the help.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about that, too small a /system partition, not enough room for full GAPPS. Good job you got it sorted. I generally recommend installing the minimum GAPPS to /system when flashing the ROM, and just a normal install for anything more you might need. I find nearly all of it to be bloat anyway.
