    TF701 - Unlock and Root from 4.3

First of all if this has been asked I apologize. I did a search and after reading those threads I did not find an answer.

    TF701
    Kernal version 3.4.57-g68f7aeb
    Build number JSS15J.US_epad_10.26.1.28-20140418
    Android 4.3

I'd like to unlock and root.
I looked on the ASUS web site and their documentation claims unlock only for android 4.2.

    So ...

    1. Do I need to go back to 4.2? and if so can you point me in the right direction?
    2. If I go back to 4.2 and unlock does it make sense to just root from 4.2. Is the root tool version agnostic? Again direction would be appreciated.
    3. If I want to put on a customer ROM again, does it make sense to do all of this from 4.2?

    Thanks
    4Nails

They never update that information since they don't support unlocking. I would be very surprised if the unlock tool would not work on 4.3. Just try it. It's just an app - it'll work or not. If not: No harm done and you would have to downgrade to 4.2
    1. Do I need to go back to 4.2? and if so can you point me in the right direction?
Probably not, but if you have to:
Download the 4.2 firmware, unzip it once and copy that file to the root of your internal SD. You should get a notification to downgrade. If you don't, reboot.
    2. If I go back to 4.2 and unlock does it make sense to just root from 4.2. Is the root tool version agnostic? Again direction would be appreciated.
If your goal is to flash a custom rom, you do not need to root. Just flash the custom recovery once you are unlocked and then the custom rom (which is rooted anyway). Or, if you want to stay on rooted stock, flash SuperSU from your custom recovery.
Right now, there is only one custom recovery available: CWM 6.0.4.7 http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=3260
    3. If I want to put on a customer ROM again, does it make sense to do all of this from 4.2?
    That's a definite NO.
It's a PIA to update your bootloader once you have a custom recovery installed since as of now, CWM cannot flash the stock firmware. So if you have to downgrade to unlock (which I doubt), you want to:
    Downgrade to 4.2
    Unlock
Upgrade to 4.3 (you would have to this the same way you downgraded. No more OTA updates once you unlock...)
Flash custom recovery and then flash custom rom.

Copied from the Asus Tech site -- Unlock Device App: Unlock boot loader of TF701T.(Only works with 4.2 JB and later OS). I would assume it would work for 4.3 or even newer. I haven't tried it as I am still trying to figure out which is the best way to root the tablet.

Yes, the unlock tool should work on 4.3. Since you have to unlock the bootloader to gain root, you might as well flash a custom recovery and then a custom rom. My recommendation would be CROMi-X 7.0.3

    Bootloader unlock of TF701T (4.2+)

    Hello all,
Sorry for nekroing, but I write this for reference.
I can confirm, I unlocked 4.4.1 TF701T successfully with the official Asus unlock tool yesterday (tablet was sleeping for 3 years with broken touch sensor).
I read somewhere the limitation of 4.2 really means: MINIMUM 4.2.
The only warning: Unlock tool does a factory reset (...for fun), so save everything before you do (I lost the tab's android_id).
As a nature of factory reset, the next boot takes more time, don't worry!

I have to mention that the tablet's browser did NOT show the unlock utility file (rar-compressed apk) , while my laptop (Firefox under Kubuntu) I found immediately.
