    Anyone Unlocked?

Has anyone been able to unlock their TF701 with the Asus Unlock Tool? I get the dreaded unknown error message that plaqued previous Transformers: unknown error occurred , which may be a network error please try later.

On previous Transformers I know it had to do with serial number issues. I checked the serial in settings and it matched the serial on my box. I literally just charged my tablet, and then immediately tried to unlock so I know it's not an app issue or anything like that. I don't even have Google synced. I just turned on Wifi and tried to unlock. I noticed that I was running an older firmware so I decided to manually upgrade that (auto upgrade didn't work even after clearing those two apps, can't remember their names) and the same error occurs. Tried rebooting of course and still nothing.

I'm guessing the unlock tool just isn't working right now? Sucks since I'm going to end up restoring all my stuff and then having to format during a future unlocking.

    Welcome to the forum!

I am just curious - what is the point of unlocking right now? Last I checked (about 1 minute ago) there is not TWRP for the TF701 so you cannot put a custom recovery on the tablet (the main reason to unlock).

Unlocking wipes everything doesn't it? I don't want to set up my tablet, download apps, play games, etc only to have to wipe the device later. I'd rather unlock and wipe it now before I spend an hour or two getting it set up right. Rooting and flashing a custom recovery doesn't wipe anything and if I decide to install a ROM I can just back everything up after root with Titanium Backup.

OP here with an update. I contacted Asus Support and they suggested a factory reset. Didn't think it would work but tried it anyways and of course it didn't. Any ideas out there...anyone successful with unlocking their 701?

AFAIK, unlocking does not wipe it. It just unlocks.

Also, at this point unlocking will not give you a way to root. You need a custom recovery which has not yet been released for the TF701.

Yes. It's exactly the other way around.
Unlocking does not wipe anything on your tablet. It just decrypts the bootloader.
If you install a custom rom it's good practice to do a clean install, meaning wiping your data partition before you flash, especially when you move between different roms. In TWRP you can wipe data without wiping /data/media, so your pictures and files are safe. But you do have to restore your apps and setup.
And sooner or later you will need to even format /data which wipes everything.
Dirty flashing, flashing a rom without wiping anything except cache and Dalvik, only gets you so far... My experience is, I have to do a clean install after about 3 dirty flashes. And that is staying with the same rom - just flashing upgrades.
Just develop a backup and restore routine using Titanium Backup, the backup function of your custom launcher, syncing with Dropbox or Google Drive.... - it's really no big deal.
I am up and running within 45 minutes after a clean installation

I was able to successfully unlock my device using the asus unlock tool straight from their website. Not a single problem. Since I am waiting on an official cyanogenmod port for this model, I am not doing much except cloud based work as rooting will wipe my user data. Unlocking will also wipe your user data so backup everything before you begin.

I was FINALLY able to unlock my tablet. I found another user at XDA reporting the same issue as me and his finally just started working too. Must have been an issue with the Asus servers because I didn't do anything different. I also can confirm that unlocking via their unlock tool DOES wipe your tablet. I lost everything which really sucks. Oh well...
