ZombiPop custom ROM Lollipop 5.1 - USB isn't recognized
I recall that the USB port would formerly be recognized as soon as anything was plugged into it with an icon or a notice at the top of the screen. Lately, however, when I plug in a thumb drive with files from my PC, there is no notification and I can't find anywhere the thumb drive is even recognizd on ES File Explorer. The thumb drive LED will illuminate and when my USB is removed it flashes a comment that it was improperly removed. The tumb drive works in two other PCs. If I plug in my camera with a USB connection, the photos on my camera show. Do I have some switch mis-qued or is there a hardware problem.

What file format is the thumb drive, and what capacity? Have you checked the FS integrity? If the camera works, it's unlikely there is a hardware problem, and the ROM seems to be doing its job. IIRC the USB port only supports FAT32 filesystem type.

I've tried 6 different USBs from 128 Mb to 256 Mb to 1, 2, 8 to 32 Gb. The 1 Gb was reformatted to make sure it was FAT32 and still the same results. I then download the ASUS file manager which I found a lot more straightforward and could at least get a reading when a USB thumb drive was plugged in. Each of them lit up, but each of them showed as an empty file. There was no on-screen notice that any had been plugged in; they could only be found on this new file manager.

I just tried two USB devices on the TF700 running Zombi-POP with the omni kernel:
A 256 mb fat32 thumbdrive - no problem. Notification shows up in the panel, drive is accessible as USB storage device in ES file explorer.
A 145 gb NTFS external hard drive - no problem. Same as above..
What kernel are you running?
TF700 on Android 7 Nougatella
TF701 Katshmallow (Android 6.0.1)
Pixel 2 Pi/Google Fi

Other thoughts: are you using the dock USB port, or the USB-OTG adapter? I personally use the Connect Dock, and it always has an external HD plugged into it. No problems there.
Have you installed any software lately?
I suggest backing up everything on the tablet, then do a factory reset (from recovery please). If that doesn't help, try reverting to an older Nandroid, dating back to when the USB port was working correctly. If you don't have any such (shame!), reinstall the ROM.

Kernel version 3.1.10-g18676ba dated to last March, about when I flashed the new ROM.
I'm using the USB port on the upper righ side of the dock and didn't know there is another one! As for new software, I can't recall when the problem began, but I'm sure I've added a few apps. The most recent incident you guys helped me with was when I couldn't download Chrome and you had me do a wipe which corrected that issue. I'm not that tech savvy that I readily understand what you and Kevin are throwing at me, but thanks for your help and patience. When I get a chance I plan to flash the new ZombiPop with ver. 5.1.1 and maybe that will cure all my ills.

Here is my two cents. You need to format your /data partition when you install a new ROM or at least wipe everything on your internal SD including your /media to get rid of unknown issues in the future. Good luck..

Absolutely. Don't bother with just wiping, do a complete format. It will take forEVER but don't interrupt it, let it finish. Then certainly, since you haven't already, flash the latest version. Had I realized you were still on an earlier version I would have suggested that first.
The "other" USB ports are in other options that you apparently don't have. I mentioned the Connect Dock that I use above, that one has two USB ports. Then there is the standalone USB-OTG adapter that is just a little box that plugs into the 40-pin connector on the tablet and has a single USB port. Sounds really handy but it's a bit awkward to use, you just about have to turn the tablet upside-down and have it sticking out the top. But it's cheap and very portable.

Thanks guys. Once the leaves are raked and the snow starts to fall, I'll probably do the update and take into consideration all of your suggestions. I'll let you know.
