TF700 and USB External DVD Drive Issue

I did a search yesterday and as it turned out, in the 101 forum there was a link from quite some time ago about an external DVD drive, but I miss spoke myself as having a Samsung burner.

Correct info is that I have a LG-GP40NB40 USB powered external dvd/cd burner.

I know this was posted in the 101 as a tag to another very old thread, but my thoughts are that posting this question in the TF700 help forum, that someone here actually with a 700, might be more help.

Not knowing much about using one with a 700 with it docked, I figured that if it didn't read it right away that I better plug in my power supply to the dock to give the 700 a bit more of a boost.

I could not read the drive on my 700. Not spending much time troubleshooting last night, I just posted on the old 101 thread to see what might happen.

Well upon further research on my LG external burner, there's two USB cord ends. I just had the main one plugged in. When I put the dvd in the drive and closed it, it ran and had a green light. But I could not see it on the 700.

What I just found out is that the second USB on the LG is called a power cord. It's supposed to be plugged into a second USB on the laptop or PC. On my dock I only have one USB on the right side and apparently there's not enough power to get the job done.

If I were to plug in my old USB hub that has a power supply on it and use both LG USB plugs in the hub, would that give the drive the power it needs?

Or should I just take it back to Best Buy and get another one?

If I take it back, in everyone's experience now with the TF700's, what is the best external dvd drive to buy?

    Thanks in advance.

Refer back to the other thread. The same thing applies to the 700 as applies to the 101. It will not work.

Here is one DVD Drive that advertises that it works with Android: Samsung SE-218BB external DVD writer can work with Android tablets!

If you are rooted, you can try this:

    Here's how:

    1. Connect DVD drive
    2. Go to an Android OS prompt as the root user (terminal emulator)
    3. Create mount point:
    - mkdir /Removable/CDROM
    4. Mount DVD:
    - mount -t iso9660 /dev/block/sr0 /Removable/CDROM

That's it! You can now read data CD's/DVD's with your TF700!

As the others have said, nothing with my LG seems to work. I plugged in the externally powered USB hub and then my LG drive with both USB ends plugged in and I got nothing.

Thanks to all for the replies.

you are right it does work. i picked one up when newegg had them on sale for $29 and free shipping last december. don't know if they still have them or not but i'm sure if you search you could find one somewhere.
