USB Computer Connection: MTP / PTP

How do the file transfer protocols MTP and PTP translate in to actual usage?

Is a USB cable simply connected from my PC to my TF 700 dock, thereby allowing me to drag files from one to the other?

Is there a category of apps that use this functionality?

    Thanks!
    Steve

As a follow up to my first question, is the USB connection between my PC and the TF700 made with USB to USB using a cable like an Easy Transfer cable used for file transfer between 2 PC's or is it made by connecting the Asus proprietary power connector to a USB connection on my PC?

Just use the charging cable, unplug from your wall wart.

Many users can transfer files just like as if it were mass storage. I have rarely had much luck and just use microSD for large file transfers. Smaller ones I use windows network shares.

There are some software/app solutions to transferring files, other than using a file manager and a network share. I like WiFi File Transfer since I can use my computer to transfer files in either direction very easily. It can be a little easier to use then using an Android file manager though they do work.

Just use the charging cable, plugged into the proprietary port on your tablet and a USB port on your computer. Choose MTP as a connection on the tablet.
Under Windows 7 the TF700 shows up as a connected device and you can drag and drop files in Windows Explorer. No such luck in XP which does not support MTP.

I use a combination of Dropbox (installed on both the computer and tablet) and Dropsync (installed on the tablet) to transfer stuff between computer and tablet. This combination accomplishes a couple of things:
There are folders, let's call it the "Documents" folder, I want to be identical at all times on both devices. That folder "lives" in the Dropbox folder on my PC, gets synced to the Dropbox cloud storage.
On the tablet side I have Dropsync set up to synchronize the "Documents" folder on Dropbox with the identically named folder on my internal storage (the Dropbox app on the tablet let's you access the cloud storage and you can manually download from there, but that's too cumbersome for me). That way my "Documents" folder on both devices are always identical.

If I have single files that I want to transfer - let's say I bought a song or album in the Play Store on my tablet and want that added to my PC, or vice versa - I set up a "Transfer" Folder on the tablet, configure Dropsync to sync it with Dropbox, put a "Transfer" folder into my Dropbox folder on the PC - done. Whatever you copy or drag into that folder will be transfered to the other device.

There are plenty of other ways to transfer data between PC and tablet: FTP, Asus Sync, AirDroid.... That's just a setup that works for me. But wireless beats cables by miles IMO.
