How to disable microphone and cameras ?

I have discovered that Google Maps permissions include automatic sound recording without user confirmation. This is an inacceptable security risk for me. Is there a way to disable the cameras and microphone, e.g. with password control, to prevent this and other misuse of the cameras and microphone by this any any other app ? For the time being I am simply keeping the Asus pad in a case when not in use but that leaves the vulnerabilities when the pad is in use.

Oh dear, I think you are going to be coming across this type of thing that clearly concerns you quite often. That said, I don't think this is in any way an issue that anyone really needs to be concerned about - unless you are someone who regularly mixes within James Bond's circle of acquaintances.

I am going to be blunt - unless you are going to learn how to do a fairly fundamental level of OS control after you have rooted your device, you are going to continuously be exposed to this type of "vulnerability". I think the simple, low tech solution for you is a small piece of electricians tape across both the cameras & something similar to block the microphone.

Google (like Apple) seem to have a view that everyone wants to be fully immersed in their virtual world - for a great many that is not something they want & a diligent approach to app permissions sometimes seems difficult.

PLEASE Search for existing threads before posting a new one. Thanks.

Really ? You don't think that anybody needs to be concerned about owning a device like the Asus TF700T which, if left on their bedside table, can record their love life for the benefit of Google or, if left on a conference table, can silently record business negotiations for the benefit of Google and without the knowledge or consent of anyone around the table ?

No, I'm just a plain ordinary guy, with no connections to the "James Bond" world, who thinks that his private life is no business of Google's.

Before buying the Asus TF700T I examined it carefully and read the specifications. Unfortunately I missed the fact that it incorporates a bugging device, a species of Trojan spyware which can listen in silently on me and my environment and which cannot be removed or inactivated by the average buyer (Google Maps cannot be de-installed from the Asus TF700T without specialist knowledge which most buyers don't have). I'd be interested to know how many of these devices would be sold if the fact that it bugs, i.e. silently records, were to be printed in large letters on the package like the "black box" in a drug data sheet.

If my fears are misplaced - if I have somehow misunderstood how the Google Maps recording function works then I'd be glad to hear an official explanation from a Google source. I cannot imagine that there are no Google people lurking in this forum. Maybe one of them might like to pop up. In the absence of such an explanation my fears rest.

I checked the calendar, not April 1st. There have been more than 400million (looked it up) android devices sold to date. 80% or more with google maps installed. What I really want toknkw is this... what the heck are you doing in your bedroom that Google would take the time to secretly spy on you??? Question 2, can you give lessons?

Seriously, all devices that conect to any network, cellphones, tablets, computer, gps, etc... have the potential to collect and transmit data on the sly, my advice would be to become Amish, or just don't conect it to the internet or gps satellites. Honestly it is the only way to ensure complete privacy.

I don't know what you mean by "turn off" Google maps. Google Maps remains installed with its audio recording/bugging function which may or may not be running in the background.

I know that and it misses the point. I use the Internet constantly and defend myself against illicit bugging in various ways. The Google Maps recording/bugging facility functions with the device owner's explicit consent (or implicit consent if the device owner didn't bother to read the small print).

    Google Maps recording function:

It enables Voice Search in Google Maps. I just used it to find Seattle.

Doubt Google uses it to record heavy breathing.

    Thanks for these links.

I wonder. I'm constantly amazed at what Google does with "my" information. Thanks to your "heavy breathing" lead a penny has now dropped. I now know why, since I bought my Asus Transformer, ads for adult stores have moved up to the top of my Google search lists for bedroom furniture.

Turning off the GPS is what I was thinking.

At least it won't know where you're breathing heavy.
