your android device does not require an antivirus software but android itself has some built-in antivirus features so you dont really need one

If you still want one checkout Lookout, or AVG

I run AVG, not sure that it's really necessary--as has been mentioned. I pretty much stick to the Play Store when installing apps and feel it's pretty safe. Welcome to the site, newfininity...c'grats on the new gear. Make sure you give it a good 8 hour charge before first use...some good reading in the link in my signature, both if you're new to android or just to jump start you on the asus models.

I have tried several antivirus/-malware apps, including Lookout, and I now think, they potentially cause more problems than they prevent. Lookout has many good features but is a resource hog.
Practically the only way you can catch malware in Android is: You install it.
Most but not all of the apps from the Play Store will be safe. Some rogue apps may have malware attached to them. A very good indicator is, if all of the sudden you get ads pop up on your home screen.
If you are careful, check the permissions an app requires, read the user reviews and check how often the app has been downloaded, you will be safe and do not need Antivirus at all.

Welcome! As you can see the antivirus/no antivirus issue is strictly a matter of opinion. Personally I use AVG. Installed it and forgot about it.
While you are waiting excitedly for your new toy, have a read through the forumns!!
