I had this same issue after JB update. Maps also crashed when I was using it. I don't know if the crash caused the high battery usage. But, after I rebooted (normal power off then on) the problem went away.. I have not performed cold reboot yet either.

I seem to be suffering the same battery drain from Maps.
I shall wish to use Maps now and again. But agree it is best to disable it for the time being.
Sorry but how do I disable Maps.
If I go to Apps>Running tab and press Maps the only option I am offered is Stop and that is for the GoogleLocation Service - is that what you mean by Disable.
From Apps>All tab I can Force Stop but no button to Disable.
[btw I had trouble finding that Apps>All tab...it is off screen]
Perhaps there is another button somewhere that will simply Disable.

problem solved, or at least a workaround figured out :-)

For me it helped to disable google to use my location for search and for loging.
I guess this causes a poorer search experience. I guess the google now is not working properly either, but to me this is not an issue. To turn off the position-service, untick all option in \\position services. I am sorry if this is not the correct name of the menue entry, my system is set up with norwegian language. See screenshot below and hopefully you can figure out where to do your changes. \Tomn

Thanks Tomn. Your image helped hugely.
I have now reduced Maps battery consumption down from 15% to 9%.

But still 9%. How come it still is consuming battery power?

I am sure I saw a Disable button somewhere - but I cannot find it now.
Perhaps it related to something else.

I just recalled that i disabled a few more functions under account/google. See image. Untick the position options under maps and latitude, and position. By doing this i am pretty sure you will loose some functionality in google now and perhaps in other services, but for me this is ok. Now the maps does not count for any battery usage if i do not launch it manually. I hope this helps you anykey. \TomN
