Have you tried the usual culprits?
/data is on f2fs file system?
Auto updates in the Play Store are turned off?
    No anti-virus software running, right?
Chrome, Firefox, Facebook app = resource hogs. If you can live without them: DO
In general you have to think "Lean" on this old, memory challenged tablet.
But even with all that it's probably not going to rival your phone or any other more recent device.
I may try that as a project over the holidays: Strip it down to the bare necessities and see if I can find a configuration where it works smoothly and stays that way..

Spot on...again. Data was still ext4. Formatted to f2fs and much zippier! Thanks once again.

f2fs has to be the single most effective upgrade for these old tabs. Of course that requires a kernel that supports it, which means a newer and more streamlined OS. At this point, that means KatKiss for the TF line.

Just curious, DB: what would you do to lean out KatKiss? Leave out GApps, of course, it's been my experience they run better without, disable wallpaper, replace stock browser (tried Naked Browser yet? Bit of a learning curve but light and quick). What else? And what would we actually use the unit for? Honestly, I don't do a lot with mine that needs max performance, read e-mail, preview photos in the field, nothing that requires huge CPU. Anything that hairy gets done on a desktop with a full-size keyboard (arthritis gets any worse, and of course it will, I'll need an oversize one).

    All of the above.
I know you've been preaching to the choir about this but I have not tried it without gapps for example. I use Gmail, Google Maps all the time and am generally way too tied into the Google sphere. Will be interesting to see what I can do without

Well, Gmail can be accessed through a browser, I do that anyway. BTW, my better half just soft-bricked the 701 trying to set up the e-mail app 'cuz she forgot her Google password (??), had to format /data again, just a wipe wouldn't do it. I wonder if you could sideload G.Maps without all the rest? Without Play Store you'd have to sideload everything, maybe just adb install whatever, that way you could get along without a file manager too. Sounds like a fun experiment, but with the modern ROMs and f2fs I actually doubt you'll see much performance improvement. Maybe I'll try that sometime with the 300, it's a bit slower than the rest. Let me know how you get on with yours...

Well I am talking about the TF700 and it does make quite a difference not to flash gapps. Just flashed the bare naked rom and boy, it's not been this snappy for quite some time! So far I only sideloaded FX File Explorer and Dropbox and will keep this as lean as possible.
I'm curious to see if it'll stay so snappy over a longer period of time.
BTW, you should thank your wife. I think it's time for a reinstall even for the 701. It is developing some annoying lag in some apps and I think I have to remove some of the accumulated cra***. But see, I have to kick my own butt! I don't have anybody who would make me do these things

Yeah, both the 300 and the 700 ran better bareback, but last time I tried it that way (IIRC) we were still stuck with ext4 file systems. Now that makes a huge difference! I didn't need to do a full reinstall on the 701, but I did need a full format of /data, not just a wipe. More evidence, in my mind anyway, that the 701 is exremely picky about filesystem corruption. I shall have to try FX file explorer, I'm still looking for a replacement for ES now that they've become such a PITA. I may steal the one from MM Cyanogenmod, which I have on my old LG 'phone, and see how I get along with it too. And while I'm wandering OT, I''ve sort-of settled on WiFi-Droid to replace AirDroid, for similar reasons; did you know that AirDorid no longer announces the local address & port to put in the browser of the other machine? Local mode still works, so far at least, but you need to know the host's IP to connect to it. WiFi-Droid lacks an easy way to save program .apk files but I can usually find them anyway. I did find that Play Store is being overly cautious (again) about what machines it'll allow WiFi-Droid on, but it seems to sideload and run just fine on everything I've tried.

The 700 is still amazingly snappy without gapps. Could kick myself that I did not try it earlier...
Yes, try FX! I installed it on the 701 since the file manager I have been using for some reason does not make sense of the file system post MM anymore. Really weird, cannot get to anything and instead of trying to find the setting (I suspect system files are hidden somewhere) impatient me just installed a different app. And I really like it. Has a split screen mode which is really handy for copying the apk from data/app to the microSD so that I can transfer them to the 700. That's what I ended up doing. Much easier to just copy the apks off the 701 than trying to find them on apk mirror.
I'm not messing with Air Droid or any of those apps anymore. I've been either syncing though the cloud or used the network feature in the file browser. FX supports that too.
