2014-06-12 18.48.35.jpgI use an Asus car adaptor that outputs 15v at 1200mA. I'm pretty sure I got it on Amazon. I guess it's possible I got it from Caseen, I don't remember.

This subject is covered many, many times on the forum & has been effectively done to death, nonetheless...

    Here are the facts...
    1) The TF700 will only charge from the a/c adapter at a fast rate as only the a/c adapter provides the 15v supply that the TF700 requires to charge quickly
    2) The TF700 will charge from as low a charge as 5v/500ma connection, but certainly only with the screen off (maybe even powered down). It will not show any signs of charging & will only charge at a rate of between 2-4%.

Both of those statements are covered exhaustively in our Battery / Charging Guide Thread linked many times here, and from the Master Help Guide

When it comes to charging in a mobile situation, the above two points still apply. Specifically, if a charger is outputting at 15v and up to 2.1 amps then the TF700 will charge as from the a/c adapter. If the output is only 5v then you'll need to have the screen (& possibly the device itself) turned off.

Another option often recommended is to get an inverter (converts 12v dc into regular a/c at an appropriate voltage) into which you can then plug the a/c adapter & charge your device as normal. (The appropriate voltage in the USA is 110v, in the UK it is 230v) As your supplied a/c charger with the TF700 is international and copes with input voltages of between 100-250v (from memory) you should have a wide range of inverters to choose from.

In conclusion, if you try the charger you already have & connect it solely to your TF700 while it is off (you could try it with just the screen off) for say 2 hours, then you should see the charge level has increased by around 4-8%. It is unlikely that you will be able to charge both your mp3 & TF700 at the same time as with mobile chargers, if they are rated at 5v/500ma, but with two USB ports, they will share the 500ma between those two ports when they are both connected. If your mobile charger has a rating of 5v/1000ma or greater, then you may be able to charge both at the same time. BUT, the TF700 will only charge slowly, while off (or with the screen off) at between 2-4% per hour when it is not connected to a 15v source.

    That should cover it

Just get the proper 15v adapter. There is no reason to use an incorrect 5v adapter. Why discuss using the wrong one?

If you know anyone handy with electrical stuff, your car's cig lighter will put out between 14 and 14.5 volts while cruising, assuming your voltage regulator is working correctly. It wouldn't take much to rig a lighter plug to a female USB cord. May seem Neanderthal, but to me it seems silly to use an inverter to kick it up to 110VAC then an adapter to bring it back down to 15VDC. Just make sure you don't plug in a standard device that takes 5V into it, unless you want to show your kids how to let the magic smoke out of the machine, 'cause we all know they run on magic smoke. Trouble is it's so difficult to stuff the smoke back in...
