What is the best ROM for speed/reliability and just sufting the net/watching videos?

    Hi,

I have been using KatKis on my TF300T for a while now and notice that it occasionally freezes up and gets a bit laggy.

I was just wondering whether this is still considered the best ROM for this tablet or whether there are others that might be worth trying.

I just want the bare minimum on tablet as all I really want to use if for is surfing the net.

    Thanks

That is almost "normal" behaviour for the TF300 and TF700. Each rom I have tried - and there were quite a few - is great when flashed on freshly formatted partitions. After about 6 months the lag starts to show....
Timudru is one of the few who's still developing for these old devices. You could try the latest versions of Zombi-Pop, but develoment has stopped on those too.
I don't think you'll find anything much better than KatKiss, so my advice would be wipe everything, format data (if you're using TWRP that would return data to ext4 so you'll have to convert it to f2fs again) and reflash the rom. Install minimal gapps if any at all and enjoy your rejuvenated tablet.
In 6 months rinse and repeat.
Especially if you have a minimal setup this should be very painless. Formating data takes the longest: about an hour. Figure another hour for setup and you could do all of it during one football game.

Timduru has released a Marshmallow version now also, but you can probably expect the same thing from it. Any computer, of course, slows down over time, but these with cheap flash memory are more prone to it. In my experience KatKiss-Lollipop does better than anything else on my 300, but it gets the format-and-upgrade treatment probably three or four times a year. It'll probably get KatKiss-MM before too long just so I can see what Marshmallow is all about. I sincerely doubt it'll be the huge advance that LP was over KitKat, though. If you are still on KatKiss-KK I suggest you upgrade to LP at least, or you could get adventurous and give me a preview report on MM.

Many thanks to you both for that - it hadn't occurred to me until now that it was super quick to begin with and has started to get laggy as time went on.

Is this a problem that has since been amended on new tablets - i.e. have they been using better quality internal memory?

I might take this opportunity to have a play around with some of the other ROMs out there - have either of you tried Cyanogemod on the TF300T?

If I end up using KK-MM, I shall indeed let you guys know how I get on (currently using Lollipop).

CM on the 300, no. I've been unimpressed with CM on several generic tabs and a cell phone. Usually better than a bloated stock ROM but that's about all you can say for it.

Since you seem interested in experimenting, you might try Omni or Zombi. Well, you might try CM also, maybe you'll like it better than I did. But as @DB said, development has all but stopped for these EOL tablets. Too bad, because I for one like mine.

I tried CM 12.1 when I first flashed recovery on my tablet. I found it buggy and it burned up my battery. With a little research I came across KatKiss and have fell in love with it. It is fast stable and and conserves my battery big time. And I really like Marshmallow 6.0.1. I still have glitches, but I think it is more hardware related than the ROM. I'm going to stick with this ROM for a while and see if I have the performance issues in the future.

Google continues to make improvements to their OS making it less resource-demanding (only young open-source OSs do this), and @timduru is as good as it gets at adapting the latest stuff to the old tired TF300. But even he is bound to leave a glitch or two while getting a brand-new release out. By the time my 300 needs a refreshing, he'll have all the major bugs worked out of KK-MM--and Google will have a new release out. Nougat? Nut Bar? There's a bad joke in there somewhere.

I found this tablet (TF300T) to be so laggy it was almost useless... until I flashed it with the CROMi-Xenogenesis ROM with the Kernel that has "OC" in the title. "OC" is "overclock". This kernel bumped up the max clock frequency to 1.8 GHz. After doing that it runs really smoothly. It is still not perfect, but now I actually like the tablet, whereas before I was about to use it for target practice. I hope this helps someone.

Now that is good news, and good info. CROMi-X was, at the time, at least one of the best ROMs out there, and @_that's kernels the same. I am surprised, however, that you can keep your CPU stable at that speed. Mine overheats and starts crashing after about 1/2 hour unless I keep it under 1.6 GHz. But lag is not such a problem under KatKiss, especially with /data formatted to f2fs.
