Sorry man, this the only method I
know of to recover from it. It may take many attempts to issue the insmod command at the right moment if you only have a few second window for adb.
So keep trying until u out are frustrated enough to toss it...

Droidbound,
Thank you for your encouragement to persevere. Tried it again and got the timing spot on and it booted into fastboot.
Cheers on your work. Will be NV flashing this machine on my next opportunity

This is my first post. It seems this thread applies to my situation but I'm not sure. I will try to explain my situation.
About a month ago, I decided to try to update my Asus TF300T. I thought I understood how to root it but was not completely sure. So when I saw the Kingo app in the Google Play Store to root, I decided to use it. I was able to unlock it without any problems. I then installed TWRP. After I installed TWRP, I flashed CM 5.1.1 ROM. However, I never did get into fastboot. Or bypassed it...I don't know which.
The tablet booted into TWRP recovery and I am able to run 5.1.1. But it is extremely slow. About 4-5 minutes before the home screen will come on. And it may connect to wifi right away or it might take another 30 minutes. Also, navigating between apps is very slow.
During one of the extremely slow startups, I was frustrated and turned it off and rebooted. Apparently the wrong thing to do.
Now when it boots into recovery, I can (or have) flashed 5.1.1. However, if I choose the Android icon, it also boots into 5.1.1, rather than JB 4.2.1. I've also lost root.
Several times I have picked it up and it's in the process of rebooting. And the battery seems to run down faster than previously. I'd like to start over but now I'm somewhat afraid to do anything.
At least it's not bricked. But I don't know if I can fix it.
Any help would be appreciated.

It's TWRP version 3.0.2-0.
I forgot to mention that I lost root when I updated.

Root doesn't matter since the rom does not boot anyway...
Go into TWRP - Wipe - Advanced - Format data
Type Yes at the next screen, then go away for at least an hour. Let the format finish on it's own, do not interrupt it.
Put the device on the charger for this.
You will loose all your data but I trust you have it backed up anyway, right?
After it is done you can flash the rom and gapps again.
You should check out Katshmallow btw. Just a suggestion...

Should you decide to stick with Cyanogenmod, you will find that it is actually rooted, but with root disabled. If you do need root--and make sure you do have a reason to need it, besides flashing recovery I mean--first enable developer options by tapping on "build number" seven times (and don't forget to rub some blue mud in your belly button), then go into the dev options section to enable root. On CM you should already have adb enabled, but it doesn't hurt to check while you're there.
Edit: credit to Robert A. Heinlein for the blue mud. RIP.
