I think I can happily report that a change of Micro-SD card has had the desired effect. I have successfully loaded all the photos that had been in the problem situation and from what I have seen they are all looking good! Many thanks to all and especially Janner43 for the input.

Thanks for letting us know
Of course, the solution was "elementary, my dear Russell"

Further to the above post, I have again tried with a brand new 32GB card (the one in the trial was a used 8GB one) and had the same problem when trying to copy the files (approximately 650MB ) directly to the new card so starting again after deleting I then copied the files to the 32GB SSD internal storage, checked that they were ok, then copied from there to the Micro-SD card and got a positive result. I can say that it is unlikely to be due to the copy process involving a large number of files because the initial batch of files saved from the camera was only about 25 or 30 pictures or roughly 120 MB and some of those were affected. But why it makes good copies by going via the SSD is a bit hard to comprehend?

Hmmmm - sounds like two things, Russell.
1. The original card was probably starting to fail &
2. With the new card, it looks as if the TF cannot keep up with the data transfer rate between the two ports to me. In other words, copying large amounts of data from the USB port to the microSD port causes problems. If you copy to the inbuilt flash memory there is greater robustness in the data checking when it then copies to microSD.
Blasted Moriarty...

Well, at least I can now follow a procedure that seems to work, for all future transfers.
Cheers
Russell.
