Unhappy TF300T no longer charging after firmware update

I was really happy with my TF300T and keybord docking station purchase (less than 3 weeks ago) up until I had the firmware automatically updated a few days ago. It was running ICS and now is JB, but I can't confirm because I can no longer turn on the tablet. I usually leave the tablet in the keyboard docking station and let both batteries (the one in the keyboard and the one in the tablet) charge. When I leave for work, I just take the tablet with me.

Today, I kept on getting a message stating that tablet battery is low and it kept on turning off on me. So I put it back in the docking station and noticed that the battery isn't charging. The docking station reports 95% charge on the battery but the tablet battery was down to 1%. I plugged the charging cable directly to the tablet and I get the battery charging image for a second or two and then it goes away. The tablet will not power up anymore. It's been plugged for over 10 hours and still the battery is not charging.

I've read several threats here suggesting to cold boot (VOL DOWN and POWER button) but as the battery is completely dead, all I get is the led in the power switch to flash twice at me and stop. Nothing on the screen.

This only started two days after it did it's "Robot belly open" routine.

Is anynody else having this issue? Is there a solution? Or do I simply RMA the unit?

    Thanks,
    -Claude.

Welcome to the Forum . Try connecting the TF to your PC. The PC will give the TF a slow charge which may fix your issue. Let it charge for 2 to 3 hours then try powering it up.

Thanks for the quick response Jeffrey, I tried that this morning and it still does not power up after 3 hours of charging connected to the PC.

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks.

    Hi Claude

Your battery has gone completely flat because of a glitch somewhere - at this stage it is mpossible to say where - hardware or software wise. You have only two courses of action really...

    1. Connect your tablet to either a powered on PC USB port - or a standard USB phone charger that outputs 5v/500ma and leave it connected for at least 10 hours. This "trickle charge" has a good chance of getting just enough life back in your battery to enable it to accept a proper charge from the Asus wall charger.

When you have done that, connect the tablet to the wall charger - if it is going to work, within a minute, the TF will power on & the device will start to charge normally. If it doesn't do this, then you are left with the only other course of action open to you which is...

    2. Contact Asus & arrange for a warranty repair.

I suspect that you had insufficient charge in the battery/ies when you did the firmware update & that has caused the problem. I cannot be certain of that, of course.

Good luck & let us know how you get on.

Thanks Janner for the comment. I have tried leaving it connected to the PC for 3 hours (as suggested by Jeffrey) and that didn't work. I'll try leaving it for 10 hours this time.

As for the firmware update, the battery was fully charged at the time of the update. Not quite sure, but I think it recommened I also connect the charger to it during the process which I did. So I don't think it's because it failed to complete the firmware update as I was using it after it completed the update.

    Thanks

    Hi Claude,

    I see

Ensure the PC is powered ON because when off, USB ports are not normally powered.

You may have fallen foul of an often reported bug with the combination that causes either random rebooting of the combo when sleeping or rapid battery drain - sometimes both together.

For a great many people, a Factory Reset after an update that changes the OS version is not only advisable, but almost a requirement. If you get it to charge, I recommend this to you & there is a guide thread in the Master Help Guide linked in my signature that covers it.

After that, if you still get a problem, the fix is either to return to Asus - & they have a mixed record of success in fixing it. Sometimes they swap out main boards - sometimes they don't and return the device as "no fault found"

A low tech solution to the problem revolves around doing two things...
    1. Do not leave an SD card in the dock
    2. Do not leave the combo together (ie docked) when not in use

    Hope that helps.

I certainly do hope it will work. I was getting to really enjoy this little device. For the last 3 or 4 days it was left docked and charging cable connected. I've been working from home recently and had it going for 10-12 hours a day playing music. I copied my entire CD collection (over 500 CDs) and put it on a microSD card in the TF. So it has become a great jukebox player! LOL! Still, I hope this works.

    Cheers!

While your tablet is hooked up to the trickle charge claudeb, I'd be inclined to pop the wart--or the block off the end of the charge cable--into a ziplock bag & pop it the freezer for 20-half hour.
I don't know if the thermal switch in the wart is tripped or not, but the baggie in the freezer trick will reset it if it is. May eliminate one more culprit.

    Hi eejit,

I tried the freezer thing and that didn't work. Left the TF slow charging overnight and that didn't work either. Got fed up and went back to Best Buy and after some time, managed to get a replacement unit for a $30 price difference (mine versus the new price they have). It would have cost me about the same to ship it to ASUS under RMA, so this way, I get a new one (full warranty) and I got it now.

Re-loading my stuff on it as we speak.

Thank to everybody who helped me out during this small crisis.

    Cheers!
