Can you get power from outlet if the battery reaches its end of life?

When the battery reaches its end of life (when it's totally dead and need to be replaced), can you just plug in your tablet to the outlet and get power from there to use? I guess not because we do that to charge, not to power the tablet, and there's nothing to charge

In theory it should work as the power cord will charge the battery and allow you to use the tablet

However, what is the point of a tablet that is tethered to the wall?

when plugged into the wall it should work fine, I know laptops can do this, ive completely removed laptop batteries and ran it from the socket and worked fine, although it will power out instantly if it gets pulled out

but what does it charge? the battery can't hold a charge anymore

yeah i was thinking about this too, with laptop you remove the battery, plug in to the wall outlet and you can use it, but with this thing you can't remove the battery, and the battery won't hold a charge, so how can the battery "transfer" power from the outlet to the tablet?

[oh and the point is you don't have to replace the battery cost you money, and i actually like the idea of using power from wall outlet so you will never run out of battery even with extreme heavy usage]

    Here is my take, no.

This is why I say that. By all indications the battery needs 12-15 v DC to do a proper charge but the tablet appears to only consume 8v when operating. My thought is that there is no pass through from the charge to run the tablet. It has been quite while but I have seen some laptops that operate that way. Dead battery = no power.

I think every laptop I've seen with a completely dead battery still works when plugged into the wall. I've also seen phones work with their battery removed, so I assume the TF300 would work the same.

As for the uses, I could actually see a few. It could be mounted on the wall with the power adapter plugged in, and it could be used as a digital picture frame, a calendar, maybe a dedicated kitchen tablet or something. It could potentially even be mounted in a car if it can receive enough power from the car's battery.
Really it could still be used anywhere you don't need to move around as much.

Plus, if it works with the power cable and a dead battery, it might also work by running off the dock's battery, so it could be used as a netbook still, just with a much worse battery life.

So you would have to remove the battery to make it work?

Typically MOST electronics that have a rechargeable battery and external power function like this:

    When powered externally:
    Slide1.jpg

    When running on battery:
    Slide2.jpg

If the TF101 is like this, then it WILL work with a dead battery.

If the charging circuit is set up like this (which is pretty rare):
    Slide3.jpg

Then when the battery dies, it will not work, even if you remove the battery.

We will not know until someone's battery completely dies and can test it out. My tablet has been used an average of 6+ hours a day for the last 18 months and between the tablet and the dock I probably get 12-14 hours of use out of a charge. When it was new it was 15-16. It will be many years before I anticipate having a dead battery and having to worry about this issue.

IMO, if you have a dock, it should power up as these batteries are designed to work in-tandem.. & I have a suspicion that a dock battery is slightly easier to replace than a tablet battery.. feel free to disagree..
