Never used it myself - but I see 'Mint' recommended a lot for an easy experience.

I really am beginning to think it's too late also.

After downloading the Asus sync tool, the Asus drivers, and the ADB fastboot, I don't think it will work. I have tried on both my Windows 10 laptop and my Windows 7 desktop, but there isn't any indication on either that I've made any progress at all. Nothing shows up when I look at either the drives on the PC or in device manager.

Mhh, do you use an original Asus USB cable or is it a replacement?

Windows is driving me up the walls more and more and I'm taking another stab at Linux. I finally found Linux compatible financial software that fulfills two must haves:
    a) I can import about 14 years worth of data (of which I really only need the last 5, but wth)
    b) it does what I want it to do in a bearable UI (I think - haven't got to reports yet...)
It's called Gnu Cash if anybody is interested...

So what Linux version again do you recommend for a newb?
Probably will run it as a dual boot first I think....
We covered the cable earlier, @notsure had ordered a new one, unlikely both are bad. BTW glad I was wrong about @notsure giving up! Is the cable plugged into a rear-panel USB2 port? Front panel ones can be finicky. And is the tablet booted into fastboot mode with the 3 icons showing?

@DB, yes, Linux Mint or its parent Ubuntu are good starter points for Linux noobs. Although a man of your abilities should not have problems with Debian, or Linux Mint Debian Edition which is my daily driver. Should you go with LMDE, though, I recommend you wait a very few months for LMDE3. Or just go with straight Debian, it has improved drastically in the last few years and has recently upgraded to a newer version (hence LMDE frantically developing their new version). I just acquired a nu2u laptop, a 2011 Dell with a core2duo, stuck an SSD in it and installed Debian Stretch with XFCE desktop. This thing runs like half the demons in Hell are after it! Cold boot to operational desktop in 20 seconds flat. Just a sec...yes, gnu cash is available in the standard repositories, although you might have to enable "contrib" and "non-free". The biggest advantage to LM or Ubuntu is the ease of installing proprietary graphics drivers, but unless you are planning on doing graphics-intensive gaming you don't really need them anyway. And again, with your know-how and a little homework you won't have any problem even if you do want or need them. A challenge, maybe, but not a problem.

Yes, I got a new cable about a month ago. I tried both cables and neither worked. Also tried both my Windows 10 laptop and Windows 7 desktop. Both the front and back USB ports. And yes, it was booted into the three icons.

I'm thinking that it might be time to list it on ebay for parts. I chatted with an Asus rep earlier who told me they'd do it for $60. But, at five years old, I'm not sure it's worth even that much. Although it still looks like it's new. So I just don't know.

@Kevin You had me at 20 seconds! Sh...eibenkleister! I gotta get this going!

@notsure, yeah, don't know what else to tell you.
That $60 offer sounds suspicious to me. For that money they are going to fix it or just look at it? My experience is whenever they can't fix it with a simple recovery wipe they go for a new mobo and it definitely would not be worth it to invest that kind of money into this device. And that's $60 plus shipping both ways most likely....
If you are willing to spend any money on it find out what it would cost you to ship it both ways to/from Los Angeles and let me take a stab at it.
No promises, but I feel confident that if it can be saved I can do it.

I still think it's a driver issue, and it might be time to try a Linux fix; drivers are already built into the kernel and they always seem to work. The Puppy Linux linked in my sig would be the easiest if your hardware will boot it, it's pretty well obsolete now. Or just choose a newer live-CD Linux distro, boot to it and install the "android-tools-fastboot" package, open a terminal and cd to the directory that has your recovery.img and fastboot flash it.

Yeah, DB, about time you got on the Linux wagon, you're behind. I think the huge speed advantage is the SSD, and they have gotten much cheaper and large enough to be useful now.. I got my 260GB one for ~$80. The OS is of course not horribly bloated like Windows or OSX is, although some say LibreOffice is way overweight. But it doesn't load at boot like parts of Microsoft Office does, so it takes another 1 1/2 to 2 seconds to load Writer if I want to, well, write something. I recommend the XFCE desktop, I like its utilities package yet it's still light and fast. If you want all the bells & whistles, try Cinnamon but don't expect as fast a boot. This LMDE2 desktop runs the Mate DE, a bit fancier than I like but at the time I didn't want to fuss with changing it. Still don't, but I think my next upgrade will be to a SSD with pure Debian. And XFCE.

Don't think you'll be sorry! I also don't think you'll need much advice, it's all pretty standard. I like to keep my Linux systems set for single-click opening and Windows to double-click just so I'm constantly reminded which I'm using. Not that I use Windows much anymore. Say, do you have a Droid around that needs to be rooted? There is a new version of Cydia Impactor out but I have nothing to test it on. And anyway I might as well fry your system instead of mine...oh, no, forget I said that, I wouldn't say anything like that...

Lately looked at my screen name? What a question! Sure I got an original Droid lying around which i would be happy to sell to you for $50 ... ok $25... ok $2.
it is rooted though which was quite an accomplishment back then. But I'm sure you can find a way to flash it back to stock and then root it. If you can find the firmware (which I doubt) and the necessary tools (deep digging through cached links and forgotten repositories unavoidable). But then - why would you want to? That thing can't even run Maps anymore, probably would work as a MP3 player.... maybe

Hey @notsure - I trust you don't mind us hanging out in your thread and going totally off topic? I just hope none of these pesky moderators catches us! Oh wait! I am a moderator!

You better be happy to have us hang out here since we're the ones helping you out - or pretending to....
So we're just chatting while we wait for you to make up your mind about the next step, ok?

Hey Kevin, yes, so far very happy with Mint, went for the Cinnamon since I figured first start with the full package and slim down later. The other way around you don;t know what you might be missing at first...
    One thing that bugs me:
[strikethrough]When I boot without using F12 it boots straight to Windows. Only when I boot with F12 do I get to see the Startup Device Menu where I can choose between Windows Boot Manager and ubuntu. Chosing ubuntu then brings up the GNU Grub screen which I expected to see right away. I don't think secure boot is enabled on the Windows side - not sure - but I thought I checked it out. You have an idea what that is about?
It's really no big deal but surprisingly annoying.[/strikethough]
Edit: Never mind - fixed it

What forum do you recommend to be hanging out in for news, advice and company?
