Trying to recover TF300T - please help!

<please bear with the long background story...I'm trying to provide as much as possible>

I've got (had) a vanilla, unlocked, unrooted TF300T running firmware 10.4.2.17 (US) with no issues. Then back in December my tablet auto downloaded 10.4.2.18 and during the 'optimizing apps' process, crashed and rebooted. Ever since then the tablet has been unstable and randomly reboots. I tried factory resets and wiping data, no change. So I waited for the next firmware, which was released yesterday (10.4.2.20). I ran it from the tablet and it seemed to be going ok, but again crashed during 'optimizing apps'. I decided to download the full 10.4.2.20 firmware zip file from the ASUS support site and placed it in the root folder to try RCK - that failed with a red exclamation mark android image. After some research, I downloaded the Android SDK and tried fastboot commands to re-flash.

I ran: 'fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash system blob' (extracted the blob from US_epad-user-10.4.2.20.zip)

FAILED (remote: (InvalidState))

I then, perhaps stupidly, erased all the partitions via fastboot and formatted the system partition. I read about unlocking the device and realised it was too late for that :/

I tried again and it seemed to work:
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash system blob
erasing 'system'...
OKAY [ 1.856s]
sending 'system' (799748 KB)...
OKAY [148.404s]
writing 'system'...
OKAY [ 3.073s]
finished. total time: 153.333s

I rebooted and still nothing. It just freezes on Asus logo. I can only get into fastboot USB mode - everything else now shows:
'Unrecoverable bootloader error (0x00000000)'

*sigh* Have I bricked it?

Any ideas on how to restore, boot into or recover my device at this point?

if your device is unlocked

perhaps you can flash cwm or twrp recovery (jellybean version)
