40 pin ASUS to USB Adapter

All I have seen on the market is the boxy ASUS style adapter

    31xAMj6x65L._AA115_.jpg

I have no idea of the circuitry within that box, if there is any other than conductors between the two ends.

It sure would seem nice (to me, at least) if there was a cable based adapter that moved the bulky part (if there need be one) away from the tablet body, as use of the device results in the adapter AND the USB device protruding from the tablet.

Sort of along the lines of the Xoom "camera card adapter", except 40 pin ASUS to female USB rather than SD Card slot. Could even have a low profile 40 pin with right angle cable exit for real compact nature.

If something like that exists, please point me in that direction. If not, then perhaps an accessory manufacturer haunting this forum might give it a try?

I believe that your illustrated adapter is "it."

Yup, AFAIK, you have a choice of two adapters - one for flash cards & one for USB. That's your lot. And the sad truth is that despite the success of the TF range, it just doesn't seem to be a big enough market for third parties to make other adaptors - only Asus.

Yeah, the 3rd-party accessory market is a sad thing. I'd like to see a version of the power cable which splits just before the 40-pin connector. It would have the standard long cable with a USB plug on the other end for charging as usual, and a much shorter cable next to it with a USB port on the other end, wired inside the 40-pin to the USB host pins for connecting a flash drive, hard drive, keyboard, or USB hub while charging. Maybe one of these days I'll get a spare cable and build one myself.

Thanks, guys. Might just make my own, once I get a look at the ASUS unit, which is waiting for me at my daughter's in the US, along with my TF300 and other "stuff". Meanwhile, as I said above, perhaps a vendor will stumble across this thread and give it a shot. (Won't hold my breath)

You might try an usb male to female converter like this one on the usb end of your power cable.
And it's a lot cheaper then the asus adapter.
A mind is like a parachute, it works best when open.

I plan on doing so, but as I said in the OP, "I have no idea of the circuitry within that box, if there is any other than conductors between the two ends."

Have you done the female to female approach?

It doesn't work - this sort of thing was tried by lots & lots of folks back in May-June 2011 when the tf101 came out - the 40 pins connection is identical across the TF range.

    Thanks, Janner.

I had figured as such, since if it were a simply straight through pinout, it would really make no sense for ASUS to make the boxy one. Not having had a chance to play with one yet, I am simply assuming that there is a valid technical reason for how ASUS configures the stock power cable. And, since you can simply use the tablet with the docking connector facing up, not big deal, other than esthetics and a huge target for an errant hand with the existing USB adapter.

While there are folks who would say "to make more money by selling an unnecessary accessory", it wouldn't take long before folks figured it out and they would just sit on the shelf while F-F adapters flew off those same shelves. Especially with the lesser physical bulk.

That said, for any aftermarket rep browsing, think of this:

    USB Idea.jpg

Gets the USB connector away from the 40 Pin attaching point, reducing any and all flexing strain as items are attached and/or removed. Side exit of cable lowers the effective profile at that point.

I seem to recall seeing various threads - I think on XDA - from enterprising types who had dismantled the 40 pin connector & worked out the pin outs etc to make their own cables as you are planning. You'd probably find them with a Google search aimed at XDA using tf101 connector or tf101 cable or similar, somewhere in a search - the threads will go back into 2011 when the tf101 was launched.
