I was a little confused by your statement above.

    You could interpret it as:
    1. Yes I am the seller, so I will do a clean install for the purchaser (me), which was Win 10, not Win 8.1
    2. Possibly you meant, "If I were buying it, I would do a clean install". Clean install of Win 8.1? Win 10?

    Thanks!

It's hard for me to know the history of the device. If I were selling it, I would clean install 10 or factory reset to 8.1 to get rid of my info on the device. I think you said it looked pretty clean and you could verify this if you have no Asus software on it. As the buyer, you can certainly do a clean install to make sure. It's best to do it now when you don't have much data on it. Unless you have some reason against 10, I'd stay with it.

    OK thanks fiat.
I might e-mail the seller to find out if he did a clean install or not.
I'll try to keep things simple here.

A clean install doesn't take long & isn't complicated. I agree with fiat_lux, especially as you bought it used and are doing this for someone else.
Wipe it, rebuild it, install the Asus drivers, test it, Macrium Reflect it, deliver it!

On the OS front for me personally...
Chrome OS (Chromebook); iOS; Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Well I decided to downgrade to Win 8.1.

I'm having a little trouble booting from the USB drive and wonder if someone might troubleshoot
    what I am doing wrong.

I created a bootable USB memory stick (formatted with OS).
Then I copied the Win 8.1 ISO to it in the root.

Went into BIOS and disable Secure boot.
Selected Kingston USB as boot drive.

It's not happening though. Always boots into Win10.

    Suggestions?

    TIA

Try using a tool like Rufus https://rufus.akeo.ie/ to create a booyablw USB drive from the ISO.

    Thanks Gtanner!

I realized the folly of my ways shortly after I posted (before I read your post).
I used ISOtoUSB another USB boot drive creator and my Win 8.1 installation
seems to be working out fine now.

My error? Simply copying the ISO to the USB drive rather than having it extracted there.
I'm probably the only person in the world who has done that silly thing.
