Want to install Windows 10 without installing Windows 8.1 updates

I just got a new T100A. I want to upgrade 8.1 to Windows 10. I put Windows 10 on a USB memory stick. However, when I try to install Windows 10, it asks me for a windows key, which I do not have. I understand this error comes when you do not have the "upgrade to windows 10" "program" installed on the computer. However, I'm having a horrible time installing updates to Windows 8.1. Mainly, it's taking forever. I've been installing updates constantly for several DAYS. I install a few updates, something fails, I reboot, it finishes, I keep installing again. There are still 650MB of updates to install!! STILL!

So, is there a way I can short circuit this process? Or do I have to wait until all updates are installed?

By the way, why does it take so long to install updates? I've even taken to using a USB 1Gbyte hardwired network "card" so that at least I'm not using wireless, but the installation takes forever. I stayed at home today and kept the T100A on all day and barely have any updates installed. For instance, it's been stuck at about 40% for "installing updates" for the last 1+ hours.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to the forum

There are a few Windows 8.1 updates that are precursors and need to be installed before you can do the upgrade. However, if you go here, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10 you will be given the option of doing an in-place upgrade that will NOT require a SN.

One more thing. If you think that the updates were slow, you may want to get an extra cup of coffee doing it on-line. Also a complete image backup before starting might be in order in case something goes wrong.

Check to see if any of the updates are Office updates. You don't need to install any of them right now. Install KB3035583 at the minimum. That will give you your Windows 10 update icon for reservation and install. I'd try to go that route as it should load the required drivers for Win10. I didn't have to look for any drivers and everything worked.

You must install the Windows 10 upgrade first before trying to do a "clean" install. If you try to do a clean install before upgrading, you will need your Windows key. Since it is in the BIOS, you could find it with third party software.

It is a bear to get a new Windows PC and get it updated. Your internet has to be flawless and fast or you may get failed updates. You can set it to manual and install manageable blocks of updates without failures. The updates should be installed sequentially and in order so a failed one messes the subsequent ones up.

    Thank you for the help.

I did download that. That is what is asking me for a product key. I do not have a product key.

Do you have any other recommendations?

Or do you know why it's asking me for a product key? The search I did said this was because my computer did not have the "get windows 10" executable, but to get that, I have to keep updating my computer, which is literally taking forever. It's taken so long I've ceased to do it.

is there an option to "skip" the enter product key step? as I recall, it's kind of hard to see colorwise.

I have done a number of in-place upgrades and was never asked for a SN. Something is missing.

Use the Tool to download the iso file. Then burn the iso file to a flash drive & run setup.exe from that flash drive.
