500GB on Asus T200TA slow to spin up. Normal?

I have 32GB+500GB in my Asus T200TA.

I use mmc partition for windows 10 and D: drive in the keyboard dock is for files. Everytime I try to access D: 500GB drive, it spins up for a second, then I open for example a 50 page Word document or PDF file, and while I am scrolling down every 15 pages or so, disk spins up for a second, system pauses for a second and then I can scroll down again.

Is this slow perfromance normal when using 500GB 5400RPM drives, should I just use that keyboard dock drive for storage and keep working files on 32GB drive, or there is some kind of problem with Power saving setup or drivers?

For the record drive doesnt spin up and pauses when I am not using it, only when I try access something or reaccess it spins up and pauses everything for a second

There are quite a few threads in the T100 section about the 500gb keyboard drive variant. Maybe take a look there?

My recollection of the contents are that they are a mix of...
1) How do I install programmes to the keyboard drive
2) Will programmes still work from the drive if I use the device in tablet mode (yes, seriously!)
3) Does the drive use a lot of battery (yes it does, quite a lot)

Maybe the variable spin up of your T200 is an attempt to stop it being used all the time from the point of view of battery use? But it doesn't sound good for the life of the mechanical HDD

thx for reply I was hoping somebody installed some driver or changed settings in a way that drive is always ON, I check my power settings, and it is strange, I have only one profile there BALANCED, no high performance profile like in my HP laptop

I have recently purchased the T200 and I have it setup exactly as you do where my files are stored on the 500G HDD. I noticed that whenever you tried to access anything on that drive it would spin the drive up, read the file, then immediately spin down again. And if you are editing files then this can be painful.

My original view was to replace the HDD for an SSD, but I have been having many problems. But now that I have an SSD working there is virtually no lag at all as it is an SSD.

I haven't really got a solution for you, in terms of editing any settings to stop it immediately spinning down, but it would be wise to replace the HDD with an SSD. Also, having a HDD will use more battery than an SSD. But becareful, it seems the T200 does not like some SSD's, or that is my perception.

The drive that is supplied with the T200 is designed to be very economical. So it could be the drive is spinning itself down and not the OS. I have wiped the eMMC and re-installed Windows from scratch and the drive still does this, so I doubt it is anything driver related.
