    Kindle vs Nook

Okay everybody help me out...niece is turning 16 and want to buy her a reader/tablet but not sure whether Kindle Fire or Nook Color is better. Ideally I could buy her a TF but have to keep the price down. She does love to read but I am sure whe will also use for games and surfing. Which should I go for? Pros, cons?

I spent some time on a Nook, it was very nice for reading....if reading is the main feature, I'd say it's a no brainer.
    It's no transformer though.

My first tablet was a Nook Color. I rooted it naturally. It's a very well designed piece of hardware, solidly made. I liked it but (as I expected) I outgrew it pretty fast.

The primary advantage of the NC over the Kindle Fire is the memory card slot. Kindle doesn't have one, Nook does. So if you think she'll do a fair amount of 'work' offline, the extra capacity may be a benefit.

Refurbished 16 gig TF101 on Bestbuy or Walmart's website was going for 299 the other day. That's about 50 bucks more than B&N Nook. As far as reviews go... based on what I've read, Nook is a little better in the area of speed but it sucks since you can't sideload much. Amazon's app selection is better. TF is better than both since you have access to all the app stores...

Oh, and while you are at it, maybe get her a kindle keyboard (the black and white one intended for reading) this round and a TF next round? Reason for that is Kindle Keyboard has free 3g!!! That offering likely won't be around forever. I think a Kindle with 3g + a TF for other uses when you are near a wifi connection is a really great combo... especially since the kindle is made for daylight viewing and tf is backlit so it's made for indoor and dark location viewing.

3g is not the fastest on the kindle, but it's a connection you have anywhere pretty much. It came in really handy on a trip to see my brother a few states over last year!

Best bet... maybe wait til May or June and get her a Memo. Same price as Nook at 250.00, but it's an asus tablet and it will have at least one camera. Nook and Kindle Fire neither have cameras.

Well when I was looking at a ereader for myself this is what I got.

Nook Tablet $199 (might as well pay little bit more for a tablet)

    The Good:
    • Good Hardware
    • Supports Micro SD card

    The Bad:
It's sold as a e-reader so it can do other things like surf the web/game.
But from what friends have told me "it's ok but not great".

    Kindle Fire $199

    The Good:
    • Has array of free books (might be for amazon prime users only)
    • Borrow book from a local library (varys by library)
    • Cloud Saves

    The Bad:
    • The hardware is sub-par.

Many complaints of lag when web surfing/playing games.
Compared to the nook tablet for the money you get better hardware.

    • No Micro SD port

So no expanding memory using a micro SD. (Which is what peeved me.)

Now all this aside I bought a Asus Transformer (TF101) and downloaded a ebook app.
And I must say I enjoy this more than a dedicated ebook reader.

If I'd have bought one I would of been tempted to play games/surf the web and prolly gotten peeved since nook/kindle were built for reading.

If anything track the TF101 price if it gets low enough get it. (Price Tracker: Camelcamelcamel.com)
If not get the nook she can always get a tablet when shes older.
    Maybe a Padfone ? :P

Thanks all...I went with a Nook after researching and considering your comments. It is $199 which is significantly less than a TF when you are talking about a present and since her birthday is this month I can't really wait for prices to drop on tablets. I think it will be good as a "starter" for her and down the road maybe she can upgrade to something more powerful.

There's some nice informaton that people have shared in this thread - thank you.

It would seem that the same things driving users toward a specific tablet hold true for either the NOOK COLOR or KINDLE FIRE., with the #1 decisionmaker being:

    1) What are you going to use it for?

That would then prompt further consideration of things like storage requirements, access to browsing, etc.

    Either way...enjoy!
