Understanding the simplicity of this idea, I am thinking it may not be that great of a solution. I know that mechanically spinning hard drives kill the battery in the dock and then the tablet. I know with my computer I can get about 3.5 hours of battery of web surfing and general use. Watching a DVD I get less than 2 hours.

Using a DVD player on the tablet will most likely kill your battery about twice as fast, and then you have to worry about keeping your DVD collection with you.

Personally, I prefer ripping them and storing them on a 64 GB SD card and a 32 GB microSD.

You make a good point, although perhaps, we could rip dvd drives straight to the tablet with it, rather than on the PC then transferring it

I will most likely be getting one whenever they are available in the UK

Fred, thanks for the SD idea. I don't have a dock so only have the microSD usable on my tf300.
Question, how sturdy is a micro SD card? now many times can it be taken in and out--and dropped à few times--and still work. They look so fragile.
Also, What would you suggest as a way to use all my millions of bigger cards. It would be nice to have my music, etc. And audio books and digital books! On them! Would a card reader attached to my USB slot work? Thinking about all the flash drives I have I may not need to carry around a suitcase of DVDs! Suggestions welcome.

I have had more issues with the fragileness of SD cards. Never an issue with microSDs.

When this first came out, I thought what a great idea. I don't think that anymore. Simply put, there's no use for it for me. A single 500 gig usb-powered hdd costs like $50 nowadays and you can store hundreds of 1080p movies on there. I'd rather carry that around than a dvd player + a whole bunch of discs.

Well, I have 3 freestanding hard drives. They are supposed to backing up my computers. Frankly I don't think they back up anything. I will try to back up my tablet, as all the fun goes out of playing with a toy when one has to redo everything. Backing up my Droid X didn't work at Verizon's site. But did give me an excuse to up grade to Droid Razor Max--so all was not lost!
I guess for a freestanding hard drive for an Android I should start with an empty hard drive???
