I did a quick look up on the memo pad 7. It has a 1024 by 600 pixel screen which equates to 169 ppi (pixels per inch) the tf300 as well as the new memo pad smart 10 have 1280 by 800 screens (149 ppi) this is seen as "so last year" the in the tech industry because by comparison the nexus 10 has the highest ppi of 299, the retina ipad 264, and and the transformer pad infinity 224 ppi. The theory behind a higher resolution is that ext and images will appear sharper and therefore easier to read.
From my own experience reading on the tf300 is perfectly fine and the memo pad 7 with a slightly higher ppi and much lighter weight would be fantastic. If you were looking for a 10 inch device I would go with the newer, and, lighter memo pad smart 10.
Also forgot to mention the nexus 7 which has a 216 ppi screen and is only $200 for the 16gb version. I definitely something to look into.
In conclusion I am speaking from my own experience, you could try to see if there is a sample book on the device in the store or try reading a Wikipedia article on it and see what you think.

Asus Memo Pad ME172V - Tablets - CNET Reviews
This should give you an idea of what this tab is meant for.
Asus made it clear today that the ME172V will not be a gaming or graphics powerhouse,
This is a pretty barebones device running a single core generic 1ghz processor. By contrast the transformers and nexus tablets all run quad core processors ranging from 1.2-1.6ghz. All of them have adequate graphics for gaming. When I said transformers I was including the memo pad smart 10 which a completely different thing than the memo pad 7
If you wanted both gaming and reading I think the best bet would be a nexus 7. I do not own one as I was looking for a 10 inch screen when I bought my tf300.

Acer Iconia A1-810 - Tablets - CNET Reviews
This is also rumoured to be in the works. It would have an 8inch screen which is nice. The nexus 7 is also rumoured to be upgraded to an 8 inch screen and bumped up specs sold at the existing price point. It probably wouldn't be on the market until July

I have an Acer A100 that has the HDMI out, USB out and a mini SD slot. Not sure how it is for gaming but it runs Kindle and looks good when your reading.

The Acer only has 512mb of RAM though - but a dual core CPU. Now if Asus had put a dual core CPU in the MeMo 7", they would have had a real market beater on their hands...
