Hi,

Thank you for reading DVD Catalyst Newsletter 104.

As I mentioned on Facebook and Google+ last Friday, my wife has been in the hospital. As a result, the last 2 weeks have been quite hectic for me, and this newsletter will be a bit different.

Tech News:

Usually I include some tech-news, and some tools4movies.com site activity and status updates on my apps, but aside from answering email support questions, the majority of my time was spent in the hospital alongside my wife, so I haven't kept up with the tech websites that much.

Google I/O:

The biggest thing in tech the last 2 weeks was of course Google I/O. The yearly Google spectacle where the next Android version is mentioned, new Nexus device(s), and of course Google Glass.

This year, aside from the announcement of a "Nexus" Galaxy S4 model, the main focus of Google I/O was more on social rather than hardware. Google Talk got replaced by Hangouts, which in turn integrates better with Google+. In addition to that, Google announced a Pandora/iRadio/Spotify version of its own with a monthly subscription service for unlimited music, and many of the core-apps got updated as well.Rather than releasing a full Android update, Google decided to update the apps instead, so there is no wait on (slow) device manufacturers for an update for their customers, which is pretty cool I think.

Blackberry Live:

Also this week, Blackberry had its yearly Blackberry event. After years of losing market share to Google and Apple, and recently even from Microsoft, it is finally getting some momentum back. Now with around 120.000 apps in the Blackberry World store, it is catching up very fast, and with its soon to be released for Android and iOS Blackberry Messenger(BBM) app, it might be able to get some of its lost customers back.

As many of you know, I am still very fond of the way Blackberry's operating system works on the Playbook, and I am eagerly awaiting further developments from Blackberry.

Tools4Movies News:

The last 2 weeks, I've spent the majority of my time in the hospital to support my wife. Of course work never stops, so I have kept up with support questions, but with everything going on, I haven't done any work on the website or app development.

Since this isn't the first time it happened, and (I hope not) it will likely happen again, I figured it might be interesting to share a bit of what is going on.

For quite some time, my wife has been experiencing health issues. A chronic fever early in her life affected her heart and lungs, and the last couple of years, things have been progressing more and more.

She has developed COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) in her lungs, and a bad Mitral valve in her heart, and the combination of the 2 causes atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rate) and tachycardia (accelerated heart rate).

No strokes or heart attacks (knock on wood), but for her, even something as simple as getting up from a chair and walking a few steps tends to result in her heart rate going up to about 150 beats per minute and her oxygen level going down to the low 80%. Usually standing still or sitting down helps in bringing things back to normal.
a bit over 2 weeks ago, early (5am) morning, her heart rate went up because of a bathroom trip, and this time it didn't went down. When she came out of the bathroom, her heart rate increased to about 150, and continued to fluctuate between 140 and 170.

The same thing happened to her back in January, but back then it was a bit more severe, with her heart rate exceeding 200 bpm.

Back then, they slowed her heart rate down with medicine, and did a procedure of restarting her heart to bring it back in a normal rhythm.

This time, it was still high, but at 170, it was quite a bit less than before, but still quite severe. Early morning, it started, and she ended up being taken to the hospital by ambulance.

It took a few days for the medicines to kick in, but they managed to get it under control, and after they got a lot of fluid out of her, she started to improve a lot.

In January, things were a bit confusing as to what was causing it, but this time, partially thanks to the longer stay in the hospital, things are more clear.

The main issue for her is the mitral valve, which needs to be replaced, but unfortunately, in her current condition, surgery is not an option. A lot of work needs to be done still on her end. A major change of diet, a lot more movement and exercise, and she has to keep the fluid-build-up to a minimum.

Right now she is doing quite good. Before, walking a few feet resulted in her heart rate jumping 50, from 90 to 140 in a matter of seconds, but now she can actually walk 100 feet without raising her heart rate as much as 5. Hopefully this will remain.

Thoughts:

With my stay in the hospital, I've tried to continue to work. I have a (crazy) amount of different gadgets and devices, so while I was staying with her in the hospital, I was able to turn it into somewhat of a testing ground for me to see what would work best.

The main functionality I needed was email. Just about everything I have can do email, but I use some features of Gmail that make it a bit easier for me, and these are non-functional on email clients on devices or accessible through a mobile web browser.

In addition to email, I was hoping I would be able to do some development as well, so a device with a desktop operating system, capable of running my development tools, was my first choice.

Surface Pro:

The first thing I drug with me was the Surface Pro. It is the most powerful portable device I have, and with it running a full desktop version of Windows, it would enable me to do a bit more than just answer support emails.

I already have it setup with development tools, and it even has a couple of my favorite games on it so it was a natural choice.

Unfortunately, I ran into issues when answering my first email. The type-keyboard I was using had serious lag. While typing my response, multiple characters and even full words were skipped, forcing me to start over and type slower.

I can type at a reasonable speed, but I'm not THAT fast, so the lag was something that surprised me.

Then there was the setup itself. The kick-stand and the keyboard are nice when you are using a table or a flat surface of some sort, but trying to use 2 chairs, one to sit on, and another for a work-area, it doesn't work well. It took a bit of molding with a pillowcase to get the keyboard to sit on a flat area, and the kickstand has a fixed angle that didn't work well.

So I ended up with a pillow behind it to get it to a somewhat comfortable level.

(update: yesterday, I did some work with the Surface Pro, and ran into the same issue. I noticed it had some updates available (including a new firmware) and after I did those, the keyboard worked just fine.)

Vaio P:

So, the next day, I grabbed my Vaio P.

Just like the Surface Pro it runs a full desktop operating system, and it actually works quite well with typing. The size and weight are just about perfect for doing support emails, and the screen resolution is enough to be able to do some development.

Unfortunately, it is dirt-slow.

I don't have the Vaio-P setup for development (before the Surface comparison article I posted a few weeks ago, I had it in its box for a while), so I just wanted to use it for answering emails, but even at that, it was unusable (which is likely the reason why I never did set it up for development).

I use Google Chrome for my work, and usually when I answer emails, I have 2 tabs open. One with the email itself, and another with either my website in order to pull a link from there that answers the question, or another email display for me to pull up the order confirmation of the person. But, 2 tabs on Chrome is enough to bring the Vaio P down to a stop.

Surface RT:

The rest of the week, I ended up using the Surface RT, without any keyboard. I was stuck using Internet Explorer instead of Chrome, but the version on the Surface RT is almost identical to that of the non-RT version, and actually supports the extra email features I use.

The keyboard covers do work fine with the Surface RT, but I found that it was easier to use it as a tablet rather than a laptop, and was perfectly fine using the on-screen keyboard, and as a bonus, I had a bit more freedom than I had with the other 2 systems due to battery-life.
During the evenings, the Surface RT proved its worth to me as well. She loves her iPad 3, and she was playing with that for the majority of the time, but in order for me to put some movies on it for her, I needed to take it home. With the Surface RT, that is a lot easier.

I put a bunch of my wife's favorite movies on a memory card, and whenever she wanted she just grabbed the Surface RT to watch the movies, and for me to fill it up for her just involved filling up a different memory card and bringing it with me.

Tips:

Health App:

One of the nurses who assisted my wife pointed out something interesting. He noticed our Android phones, so he directed us to an app called Fooducate.

The app has a barcode-scanner, and it compares food products. When you are in the store, you scan a product, and it shows you the good and bad things in it. In addition to that, it brings up a couple of alternatives with different ratings.

If you are picking apple sauce for example, scan one, and it will show you different ones that are more healthy.

Of course we haven't had much time yet to play with it, but we will be putting it to good use when we are getting groceries.

They have an app for Apple and Android. More information can be found here:
Fooducate | eat a bit better

Content:

Unfortunately, my wife's health issues have been going on for a while, and will continue as well. If there is one thing that I have learned over these last years is that anything hospital-related involves a lot of sitting around and waiting.

In order to make it easier for both my wife and myself, I always have some device with content ready to go, just in case. Of course a tablet of some sort works best, but even something smaller like an iPod Touch, filled with at least some shows, movies or games will make the hospital experience a lot more bearable. Waiting in an emergency room until your name is called out, waiting for the doctor to show up with results of an x-ray, minutes often feel like lasting hours, but with something to watch or do, time flies.

While online services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO Go are great, do think about some local content to keep yourself busy as well. Our hospital has wireless internet access for their guests, but the signal in my wife's room was a bit flaky, and 3G Cell phone data for streaming video is a bit painful. For me, it was an easy fix by just bringing in a spare wifi router in the next day which I connected to their wall outlet, but it isn't always that easy, so make sure that you have some games and/or videos that don't require an internet connection.

Closings:

That is it for this week's "newsletter". Next week will be back to normal.

Thanks for reading, and see you next week.

Sincerely,
Mitch.

Hi,

Thank you for reading DVD Catalyst Newsletter 103.

A quiet week this time. Most of my time this week was spent on development. I am working out a few ideas for MovieGallery and ImageGallery, which, hopefully, will make both apps more user-friendly and fun to use. Aside from that, I don't have much to write about this week. There was not much in terms of interesting tech-news that caught my interest, but there were a few that did.

Tech News:

NOOK HD NOOK HD+ get Google Play.

NOOK HD gains access to Google Play, apps required - SlashGear

As of today, Barnes and Noble is rolling out an update for its latest generation of NOOK tablets that adds the ability to install the Google Play Store.

Great on one end, because it opens up the NOOK HD and HD+ completely to installing whatever is out there for Android, but to me it looks like Barnes and Noble is throwing in the towel.

While B&N had issues getting apps in its app store, mostly because of a block against free apps with ads, with this move it gives something that many of its customers want, but in turn, it gives up the child safety and device security by no longer monitoring what is being made available for apps for the NOOK, and more importantly for them, the revenue stream associated with their cut from the apps sold through their own app store.

Only a few weeks ago, B&N released its own in-app purchasing system, and I'm sure a few developers were working with it, but I don't see them continue if their apps are already available through Google Play and can be accessed on the NOOK.

In addition, which developer is now going through the hassle of putting their apps through B&N testing procedure if the app can be uploaded without that to Google Play and be ready for sale/distribution in minutes, rather than weeks.

With Google Play becoming a part of the NOOK, the NOOK will become a more of a tablet than it was before, but all the digital content B&N offers can now eailly be obtained through Google Play directly, and likely even Amazon as well by installing the Kindle App through Google Play.

Of course, this will result in more NOOK's being sold, but is B&N really making anything from just the hardware sales? Amazon's Kindle Fire devices are fully rooted into Amazon's commercial world, which enables it to sell the hardware with a lower profit margin, and making more profit from sales of digital goods (music, apps, games, videos). B&N is likely following a similar strategy, but by enabling its competitor app stores to be installed, it seems to me that they have given up.

One last effort to compete with the Kindle Fire, and in turn, they will just enable both Google and Amazon to profit from the NOOK. It is great for the NOOK users, but I think that with this update, the NOOK HD and HD+ will mark them as being the last of the NOOKs.

Anti-Piracy Measures.

Earlier this week, a particular game developer gained a lot of attention with a unique way of dealing with software pirates. In order to be ahead of the pack, the developer released a special "pirate" version of his game to popular file-sharing sites. The game itself, a game about becoming a game developer, was modified in such a way that when the pirated version was played, in-game, pirates were doing the same thing as what the player did.

Whatever was created in-game was always being pirated.

Game Dev Tycoon developers give pirates a taste of their own medicine | Ars Technica

This by itself is of course quite unique, but it also resulted in quite a few posts on websites from people who were playing the pirated game and complaining about the in-game piracy.

"Why are there so many people that pirate? It ruins me! ... Not fair"

"I can't make any profit... I mean can I research a DRM or something"

of course ignoring the fact that they are actually playing a pirated version themselves.

The article also shows some scary statistics as to paid vs pirated. 250 vs 3000, but, I don't see this as being correct. On the day of release, the developer was actually seeding his pirate-version of the game, and posted up a torrent on a few popular websites. These sharing sites receive a lot of visitors, and many pirates seem to just download something try it for 5 minutes and then ignore it/delete it etc.

A few months ago, a developer used a popular sharing site in a slightly different manner.

How one game developer is making The Pirate Bay work for him | Ars Technica

Again scary stats, but with a big banner image on such a site, I don't see how these numbers can provide a developer with a real indication of piracy of their work.

What does give a better perspective on the piracy rate is the popularity of their game or software on these sites without developer interference. A Google search for pirated versions of my own software brings up over 650.000 links, which is painful. Big companies sent out take-down requests to whatever they can find, but the time and money involved for this purpose is something I can not afford. Implementing some form of DRM/protection is of course another option, but all this does is giving the "crackers" a challenge for a few hours, and no matter which method is used, it never holds up and results in more work for the developer in assisting people where the DRM causes issues, or people lost their codes.
Tools4Movies News:

When it comes to cleaning my desk, I'm always a bit behind. Whenever I am testing something, I end up with a collection of different gadgets, tablets, computers, phones etc, and I don't always put them away when I am done with them.

So over time, charger cords end up being knitted into a sweater, tablets end up piled on top of each-other, you get the idea.

Last weekend I figured it was time to organize them a bit, so I untangled the cords, matched them up to the correct device, and placed them into the "gadget cabinet".

While putting them away, I ran into a few of the older devices I don't use that often, and noticed the resemblance of those with the current devices such as the Microsoft Surface, and figured it would be cool to post up an article and put them next to it for comparison.

https://www.tools4movies.com/evoluti...e-surface-pro/

For the article I used 3 devices.

The earliest one is the HP Jornada 720, one of the early Windows CE handheld PC's, which falls more in line with the Surface RT. Both share similarities in running on a mobile-optimized (arm-based) processor, and run an operating system that is not fully compatible with that of their bigger counter-parts, but offers familiarity in use. And of course, both operate by means of touch-screen and keyboard.

The second one is the Sony Vaio UX, one of the first real Pocket Computer devices out there. Similar in specifications as laptops from that time, but about half the size of a DVD case, and of course capable of running a full desktop operating system.

And the third one is the successor of the UX, the Vaio P. A bit larger , but its size increase is mainly caused by the inclusion of a more usable keyboard.
The article includes pictures of each of these devices alongside the Surface Pro, highlighting some of the features they have in common, as well as features I wish one or the other should have taken over.

Tips & Tricks:

Streaming videos to Apple, Android and Blackberry.

Some of the most popular tablets, including the Google Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Apple iPad 4 are designed for media consumption from their respective app stores. While some are offered with different storage capacities, once you picked one, there is no way to actually expand the storage without jumping through hoops to get it to work.

Of course there is enough room to store a couple of movies of your own, but with no storage expansion, you can only put a few of them on your tablet, and to add new, you have to remove the ones that are already stored on it.
I mainly use my tablets at home. In the evenings, when my wife is watching "Housewives" or something similar, I watch a movie or a few episodes on one of my tablets.

Because I usually don't have an idea which tablet I'll be using in the evening (I have a few, and tend to just grab which one has enough of a battery charge), and what I want to watch until late in the afternoon.

When I know which movie I want to watch, usually right before supper, I often have to start a conversion of it with DVD Catalyst, so when supper is done, the movie is ready. Rather than getting up, connecting the tablet and copying the movie over, I just stream them instead.

Here is how I do it.

1. Make sure you have a movie in the correct format.
Obviously, I use DVD Catalyst for my conversions, but just make sure that your video file is in (for Apple, Android and Blackberry devices) the proper MP4 format.
If you use multiple, fairly recent devices (Tegra 2 or newer Android tablet, such as the Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab 2, Xoom, Transformer, Thrive, iPad 3, iPad 4 and iPad Mini, Kindle Fire HD, Blackberry Playbook, Q10, Z10 etc), you can actually use the same video file to play on all of them.

2. Make sure the movie file is "streaming-capable".
In DVD Catalyst 4, there is an advanced setting (Power User > Global Settings) near the bottom in the "Tweaks" tab called "enable streaming for MP4 files" which will, after the conversion of a video is completed, make the video file streaming-capable.
(If you use a different conversion tool, or have a collection of MP4 files already created without this setting enabled, you can use the streaming application to enable it as well.)

3. Install the free MP4 Streaming Server.
The following guide explains how to install and use it:
https://www.tools4movies.com/mp4-str...-server-guide/

The MP4 Streaming Server is accessible through any web-browser, or if you are using an Android device, our MovieGallery video player application.

Note: If, after tapping on a video to play it, it takes a long (minutes) time before it starts to play, it is likely that the video doesn't have "streaming" enabled. To make the file streaming-capable, select the video in the MP4 Streaming Server application, and tap on the small orange lightning-icon at the bottom, next to the search box.

If you use DVD Catalyst, and have it automatically enable streaming, it is as simple as starting a conversion and adding the file to the MP4 Streaming Server app, and you can access the video on your tablet from anywhere in the house.

If you would like to stream your movies outside of your house, so you can watch your videos at Starbucks or something similar, things are a bit more involved. For details on how to stream your videos over the internet, have a look at this guide:

If you already have a large movie/anime collection, chances are that you have video files in either MP4 or MKV format.

While these formats are quite common, unfortunately playback support for these files is quite limited.

MKV is only supported by video players such as Dice Player, MX Player and Rock Player, and while the MP4 is supported by the tablets video decoding chip, the settings used to create these video files are often not optimized for tablet playback.

Players such as Dice Player, MX Player and Rock Player overcome this by using a technique called software-decoding, which uses the tablets processor to decode the video file. Aside from a higher power consumption (the battery drains quicker), depending on the performance of your tablet, as well as the format (H264, DIVX, XVID, VC1) and resolution (720p/1080p) of your MP4 and MKV files, chances are that you run into playback issues such as stuttering video, freezing video and lip movement not matching up with the actual voices.

Some players work better with some files than others, so you could install multiple players and when you run into issues with one, you try the video in another player, but of course this causes an interruption with your movie watching experience.

The best solution to overcome these issues is to convert your videos to a format that is supported by the video decoder chip, aka hardware decoding.

A quick google search will bring up a large collection of different conversion tools that can help you with this, but unfortunately, the majority of these require you to either convert files one at a time, or only offer a batch-conversion mode that uses one quality option for whatever you convert.

If you have a large collection of different types of videos, SD resolution such as DVD-sized or HD content in 720p or 1080p resolution, using 1 fixed setting for all your conversions results in larger-than-needed file-sizes (a 2-hour DVD-sized movie will end up just as large as a 2 hour Bluray sized movie).

The best option to use for this is DVD Catalyst 4.

Originally developed to make the conversion of a large amount of video files a lot easier, it enables you to simply drag & drop your files, folders, or even drives filled with your video files, on top of the program,

and it will convert them all in batch mode with a single click.

one video file, a TV show season, or even a full Anime series, just drag and drop and tap Go.

The best thing about DVD Catalyst 4, aside from having profiles for just about any device capable of video playback (Android devices such as the Motorola Xoom, Kindle Fire HD, Galaxy S3, Nabi 2, Nexus 7), Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod, and even car DVD players and child-tablets like the Innotab 2) is that it has "smart" conversion profiles.

These "smart" profiles use special settings (the HQXT profiles, available for most popular devices) that automatically adjust themselves during the conversion to produce the best quality video, regardless of the (SD/HD) resolution of your original videos, and activity.

Rather than using a fixed “bitrate” (Kbps) quality setting, which is what most conversion tools use, DVD Catalyst's HQXT settings use fixed “visual” quality settings.

For example, using "fixed bitrate" settings, a 2 hour movie converted with 2000Kbps will always end up around 2GB in size. SD, DVD, Bluray, HD 720p, HD 1080p, romanceor the latest action blockbuster, no difference.
But, the visual quality will be quite different. For SD, 2000Kbps will be fine for both romance and action videos, but if you go up in resolution, the action video at 720p will start to look bad, and at 1080p, it will look terrible.

Using "fixed visual quality" settings, as the words suggest, keeps the visual quality of the videos the same. Because it looks at the actual video during conversion and then determines what to use to achieve the set visual quality, the file-size fluctuates instead.

A romance video doesn't need as much an action movie, so a 2 hour SD romance video can end up around 600MB instead of the 2GB (2000MB) and still look identical (or better even). Of course going up in resolution will increase the filesize a bit.

For an action movie it works even better.

Using a "fixed bitrate" setting, to make the action scenes look great, you will need to convert the entire video using high quality settings, but, with most action movies, there is usually a 50/50 spread between action(fast) and story (slow). With the smart conversion settings, it automatically adjusts. Action scenes get more, slower scenes get less, and overall, better quality and smaller file-sizes.

So if you have a large collection of different types of video files, and would like to make them work with hardware-decoding for your tablet, give DVD Catalyst a shot.

Drag and drop your files, folders on top of the program,
select the HQXT version of your device profile,
tap Go.

In addition to batch-conversion and "smart" conversion settings, some other (unique) features of DVD Catalyst that might interest you are:

* Volume maximizer, which make the volume of all your video files the same loudness, regardless of what volume your source videos have,

* Batch-renaming, rename the video files to follow your own naming system, such as Anime Show 001 - Anime Show 255, TV Show s01e01 - TV Show s01e24,

* Automatic language and subtitle selection, for example, if the MKV file has English audio, select that, otherwise, enable Japanese audio and enable English subs.

* Ability to use your original folder to store the created video files, or recreate your folder structure on a different location.

Not a fitting article for the forums, but I'm sure there are some of you that are interested in the Microsoft Surface Pro or a similar tablet with full laptop-replacement capabilities.

It doesn't happen too often, but it was time to do some cleaning around my work area last weekend. I have a fair collection of different devices, and especially when testing an update or new release of one of my apps, I tend to bring out quite a few of them to make sure everything works as it should.

While untangling power-cords and dusting off different gadgets, I ran into a few devices that resemble the Surface Pro in both look and functionality, and considering some of these are a bit older and forgotten by most, I figured I'd put them through a photo-shoot alongside the Surface Pro.

Above a pic of the Sony Vaio P next to the Surface Pro. The Vaio P is a "netbook", and actually does quite a few things right for me, except performance.

Hi,

Thank you for reading the 102nd DVD Catalyst Newsletter.
As mentioned last week, due to time-constraints, I had to make a choice on either writing a longer one every other week, or one that is a bit shorter every week. Based on some of the feedback I received, I opted for continuing to do one every week, but just a bit shorter than before.

This week, on Sunday, I released the update for DVD Catalyst 4 I mentioned in the previous (101) newsletter, DVD Catalyst 4 v4.4.1.1. I also released a minor update for MovieGallery, v2.2.4 as well, and this coming week, I'm hoping to update ImageGallery as well.

But first, this week's tech news.

Tech News:

XBOX720.

In less than a month, on May 21, Microsoft will be revealing the new XBOX (playxbla.com » The Next Generation Of Gaming Will Be Revealed On Tuesday, May 21st!).

Of course for quite some time, rumors have been floating around the web around the new system, and of course with the announcement date officially set, the rumor mill continues.

Supposedly, it will be launched in November (Here Comes the Next Xbox | Paul Thurrotts WinInfo content from Windows IT Pro), and be released in one version with 2 pricing options, a full price of $500, or $300 for one with some form of subscription plan(Veteran Tech Blogger Spills Xbox 720 Reveal Date, Pricing and More - IGN).

Microsoft experimented with the subscription plan last year by offering the XBOX360 for $99 with a 2 year XBOX Live plan (Microsoft Confirms $99 Subscription Xbox 360 - News - www.GameInformer.com) but with the system being near the end of its life-cycle, interest was a bit lackluster. By offering it upon release of the new one, it will be able to undercut the initial price of the Sony's Playstation 4 considerably, and with XBOX Live being a very large part of the XBOX experience, it is quite likely that many people will jump on something like that.

Other rumors that caused a bit of an uproar on the web regarding the XBOX720 are a restriction/block on the ability of playing used games on it, and an "always on" requirement.

I hope Microsoft has seen the arguments people posted on the used games ordeal, and decided against it. The used games market is quite big, and I'm sure that MS wants to make at least some money from sales that way as well, but one of the reasons it is so big is because the high prices of games. I understand that development of games is expensive, but $60-$70 for a new release game is a bit much for most (some are worth it though), especially when you take into account that the most popular ones (Call of Duty, Battlefield, Fifa, etc) are not really that much different from the one before. Being able to wait a few weeks after release, and pick up the same game for half the price is something many people benefit from.

The "Always On" requirement is not too much of a concern for me. It is annoying, but after playing games through Steam on my Surface Pro for a while, you get used to the online check/account verification stuff. I just hope it will be non-intrusive.

AmazonTV.

Amazon has set its sights on Netflix, and rumors are that this fall, Amazon will release its own media player device(Amazon TV set-top box rumored to be in the works - SlashGear). Similar as Netflix with the original Roku box 5 years ago (Review: Roku Netflix Player | Macworld), the AmazonTV will connect to your TV and your Amazon account to provide access to its ever-growing collection of free (with Amazon Prime) movies and TV shows and of course the ability to rent and purchase new release content as well.

While Netflix has more content available for streaming, Amazon is a bit cheaper with its prime subscription ($79 vs. $96 yearly), and it also provides easy pay-options for non-free content such as new releases, making it a bit more interesting to use than Netflix in my opinion.

10 years of iTunes.

Hated and loved by many people, often at the same time, iTunes(Apple) turned 10 this week.

Originally released as a music player with playlist abilities, it has grown into the foundation of the iPod, iPhone and iPad, and if that wasn't enough, turned into the most popular music store, turned the way we look at songs, apps, books, video and games upside down in the process as well.

Of course while it has grown into much more than what its original design, it does stay true to its roots thanks to the quirks and annoyances that plagued the early releases.

Samsung Galaxy S4.

The successor to the most popular Android smart-phone is now available. This week, most carriers will be offering the Samsung Galaxy S4.
Yesterday, I read a review on the S4 (Samsung Galaxy S 4 Review - SlashGear), and it looks quite interesting.
But, as many of you, I'm still stuck with the phone I have at the moment (Galaxy Nexus) for a while, so who knows what will be out then.

If you are interested in the Galaxy S4, of course the review above is quite interesting, but here are a few more:
DVD Catalyst 4 v4.4.1.1 was released earlier this week.

As mentioned in last week's newsletter, there was an issue with converting video files for the Kindle Fire HD, which has been fixed, and, thanks to an update from VTECH, the video abilities of the InnoTab2 and InnoTab2s have been changed (reduced), rendering the higher-quality video format that DVD Catalyst was using for the conversions no longer playable on them (making the original InnoTab 1 actually a better choice for video playback in my opinion). As a result, the format used for the InnoTab conversions have been changed to reflect the VTECH update.

MovieGallery 2 v2.2.4 was also released this week.

A minor update (2.2.3 > 2.2.4) but the changes are actually quite visible this time. I (again) modified the settings for 2 of the view-modes to make the image-viewing experience more smooth.

Thoughts:

Earlier this week, I read an article on a tech-site on how one of their reviewers tried to go without their Smartphone.

One Week Without A Smartphone? Impossible - SlashGear

For me, going without a Smartphone wouldn't be an issue. The phone-part is a requirement, because it gives comfort to my wife (because of her health) that she can reach me. Whenever I have to go somewhere by myself (she usually comes with), a quick groceries run or something similar, she always makes sure I have my phone with me.

But aside from that, I can (and actually prefer to) go without, and when my wife comes with me, my phone stays at home.

Before I started doing what I do now, I worked in various IT job positions, and all of them involved offering some level of phone support. One of them was in a small, but extremely busy local computer shop, and with 3 people building computers and phone support, it was up to me to assist the people in the store AND handle the phone-sales as well. As a result of this "phone-overload" I have had enough phone dealings to last me a lifetime, and build up some form of allergy towards phones.

But email is a different matter. With an online business, web access and email access are something I cannot go without. Out of the multiple ISPs that are available to me, I actually use the slower but more expensive one, purely because of reliability. I tried the others, but I need my internet access to actually work when I need it. With the others it is more luck that anything else.

But, if it isn't work-related, I think I would be able to go without technology for a while.

Thank you for reading this week's newsletter, and have a great weekend,

Sincerely,
Mitch.

Many people believe that the time of physical content such as DVD and Bluray is coming to an end. With the ability to purchase a movie or TV show online, and watch it in a matter of seconds, I can see the reasoning behind it, but nothing is further than the truth.

Physical movie content comes in 2 forms. DVD or Bluray, thats it.

But if you look at digital content, each brand and device category has their own movie store. iTunes only works with Apple, Google Play works only with Android, Samsung MediaHub only works with Samsung devices, and so on.

None of these stores take the content you already have into account, so if you want to watch your favorite movie on your TV and on your Samsung Galaxy S3, you will need to purchase it twice, and what makes things even worse is that purchases from one don't mix with those from another, so if you switch to something else, from Apple to Android or the other way around, the content you purchased for your old device will not work on the new one, so you will need to purchase your favorite movies again.

But, if you purchase your movies in physical form, you can use a program such as DVD Catalyst to convert your movie to a format that will work perfectly on your Samsung Galaxy S3, and if you do upgrade later-on, you can either use the same file, or convert the disk again for your other device.

This "How To Guide" explains how you can convert movies and TV shows for your Samsung Galaxy S3 from your existing collection, so that you can watch them on your Galaxy S3, without having to purchase them again from a digital movie store.

Requirements:

* Of course your Samsung Galaxy S3. While you don't need it for the actual process, of course if you want to watch a movie on the Galaxy S3, you need it to be able to put the movie onto it.

* The connection cable for your Galaxy S3.

* Windows-based PC in order to be able to run DVD Catalyst 4. DVD Catalyst 4 is currently only available for computers and laptops running Microsoft Windows. It works on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, on 32bit as well as 64bit systems.

* Conversion software. There is a large variety of different tools available for this. You can do it the free way, with applications such as Handbrake and Freemake, or with one of the many overpriced applications that are found all over the internet, but for this guide I am using DVD Catalyst 4, one of the most popular conversion applications for phones and tablets due to its ease of use, the support provided when needed, and of course the very affordable price.

You can purchase DVD Catalyst 4 (for a limited time 50% off) by clicking here (link), or download the free trial version by clicking here (link) The trial version converts 25% of each item.

Currently there is no Apple Mac or Linux version available of DVD Catalyst 4.

* DVD drive for if you want to convert DVDs or a Bluray drive if you want to convert Blurays for your Samsung Galaxy S3, or direct access to your video file (AVI, MKV, ISO etc) collection if you want to convert those to the proper format for your Samsung Galaxy S3.

With video files, DVD Catalyst works without the need of anything else. It even includes its own video and audio codecs, so it is even able to convert video files to Samsung Galaxy S3 optimized videos even if your might not be able to play the original video. However, if you want to use DVD Catalyst 4 with Blurays, additional software is needed.

* Movies or TV shows. Of course you need videos that you want to watch on your Samsung Galaxy S3.

DVD Catalyst can not convert so-called "Digital Copy" movies, or movie and TV episodes purchased through iTunes or similar online video services such as Amazon UnBox and UltraViolet. These video files are DRM-protected, which prevents software such as DVD Catalyst from converting them.
Video files that do not include DRM such as AVI, DIVX, ISO, MKV, MPEG etc can be converted normally with DVD Catalyst.

Quick Guide:

Step 1: Download and install DVD Catalyst 4 on your computer.

Step 2: Start DVD Catalyst 4 and select the Samsung Galaxy S3 video player device profile.

Step 3: Insert your DVD or drag your video files over onto DVD Catalyst 4.

Step 4: Tap Go to start the conversion process.

Step 5. Connect your Galaxy S3 to your computer and copy the file over.

Once completed, just open the build-in video player app on your Samsung Galaxy S3, and tap the movie to play it.
