new Microsoft Surface tablet includes keyboard case/dock a la Transformer

Microsoft at 3:30 PM today announced their new line of tablets. These things look pretty slick....built in kickstands in the cover, magnesium chassis, competitive thinness, double digitizers, a case that includes a fold out touch type keyboard and trackpad....

If these things run at all well, they could give both Apple and Google a run for their money. At the very least, they'll be much easier to find in stores than the ASUS tablets, unfortunately.

    Interesting.

There is such a thing as too thin, though-- making that keyboard either some sort of weird flexible thing, or else prone to breakage.

And I'm still not convinced Win8 won't be the next Vista/win ME.... you know... the version to definitely skip? The one that marketing had a serious hand in creating... <meh>

Still... a M$ entry could help spur the existing competitors to keep improving their offerings.
TF101 B70 series, USA running Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3, rooted. 64gb microSDXC, keyboard dock with 32gb microSDHC in an adapter
Dell Streak 7 running Honeycomb 3.2, rooted. 64gb SDXC. Mainly used as a music player.
Virgin Mobile Optimus Slider, rooted -- frequently used as WiFi hotspot. 16gb microSDHC.

If it wasn't microsoft. They have tried hardware before and there is a reason you don't see much of it around.

Their timing couldn't have been better....right after Apple's conference, when key staff are starting summer vacations. I wonder how quickly these tablets will get into the market.

Yes, there's such a thing as too thin...but it's made of magnesium. My SLR is made of that, and it's pretty tough. I guess we'll see. I have questions about Windows 8 too....but I think it's less of a concern on a tablet than it is on PC. Seems to me that this one might be great for mobile, but not so much with mouse and keyboard.

At the very least, it'll wake up Google and Apple. This new product LOOKS great....but we'll have to see what reviewers say, I guess.

They've got excellent lines of keyboards, mice, webcams......they've got the best console of this generation. Really, I don't think their hardware is THAT bad. You can't judge them by tablets they made 12 years ago, when noone else has made them. The POSSIBILITIES in hardware are different now, and may finally allow them to accomplish what they tried a decade ago.

By no means would I say this guarantees success....but Microsoft is a major player, and they have money to push their way into the market. Meanwhile, Google isn't doing alot to push their own platform. They're going to have to step it up, or lose market share.

I did forget about the xbox system. Pretty good system, I never liked their mice or keyboards much though.

I like the fact the Microsoft have made a touchpad with key board but I am not convinced by the kickstand and magnetic keyboard. They seem to me to be clumsy, almost after-thoughts, and can only be used on a level surface.

So would it be possible for ASUS to produce a Transformer with microsoft innards and software?

That device looks very slick... quite "Apple" in its styling... waiting for the "look n feel" lawsuit
