Thread: Using DVD Catalyst to make the *best* Blu-Ray transfers to MP4

    thats the one.

the beta is free, but requires you to get a new key from their forums once a month or so.

it doesn't compress, but it does let you choose what to keep and what not, so you will be able to shave a few hundred MB to a gig from a file, but still in the 30GB's for most.

As for the profile, just use the one you did (1080 hqxt tf101) and change the CRF setting to 20. if it is just kids movies, maybe even adjusting the resolution to 1280x720 (720p) would be an option.

CRF auto-scales based on the resolution, so no worries about the bitrate. Going down in resolution will make a bigger size-difference than trying to compress an already heavily compressed stream (bluray is already H264 video, similar as the MP4 files) to the same format.

DVDs compress a lot better due to the old MPEG2 codec that is used. With Bluray, you are converting from and to the same video format. Going from 30GB to 4.5GB using the same resolution will result in visual quality differences.

To give you an idea, a while ago, I converted How To Train Your Dragon from Bluray to a 15GB 1080p MP4 file for my Xoom. That one looked great, but animated videos compress a little better than live-action.

Thanks for the detailed reply again.

I actually did that - settings of 1080 hqxt tf101) and change the CRF setting to 20, and it did come out at about 4.5GB from a 21GB file and it was pretty poor in all honesty, but that's to be expected shrinking it down to that size.

Does your software allow for changing the settings to make a larger file size that wouldn't affect image quality much?

    Thanks!

The crf setting at 20 should result in a video quality nearly identical to that of the source video.

You can try turning it off, and manually set the bitrate (video quality in Modify) to 5000+

CRF converts with a variable bitrate. Whatever is needed to reproduce the visual quality of "20" will be used as a bitrate. With CRF off, a fixed bitrate will be used instead.
