    droidbound -

Actually right after I posted those screen caps and asked the question you answered above, I took the plunge and installed the gapps file. Worked perfectly. There are things that will take some getting used to, such as where the Widgets are hidden instead of where they are in the stock Android library, and that the Home page is now whatever is the further to the Left (I liked the Middle desktop pane better ..... can that be changed?)

Two questions about being rooted and this custom ROM -
    1) If this is not the latest KatKiss 4.4.4, can I (how do I?) "upgrade" without wiping everthing off the Tablet again?
    2) I noticed that there is an entry selection in the Setup for "Ethernet" on or off. Since the TF101 has no Ethernet port per se, what is this for?

Last - I looked over the KatKiss website, couldn't find any documentation about what's in KatKiss and what you can do. Do you know of any "manual" for KatKiss 4.4.4?

Thanks so much for your help. This old Unix/Windows/Mac IT guy is learning something new.

Here is the "manual page" for Katkiss tf101. It I has the latest builds and instructions on how to use certain features. I think the ethernet setting might be for people who used a USB otg adapter.

Gtanner00 - Thanks, but I think the hyperlink didn't "happen" for the Manual Page for KatKiss 4.4.4 TF101.
    Please try again or edit?

    Gtanner00, or anyone -

Can you recommend "SAFE" sites to download older versions of APK's?? I'm finding that some newer versions of apps like Skype 5.x will not work on KatKiss 4.4.4.

Also, how do I install older non Play Store APK's when running KatKiss?? Do I need to find an Installer app or install using Recovery from TWRP installed on the Rooted TF101? Sorry, I'm new to Android and Rooting.

Looks like TimDuru already has you covered. Take a look at the second post here [ROM][KK 4.4.4] [ KatKiss-KitKat #036 ] [Sta… | Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 | XDA Forums. He even lists the exact version that works.

I guess TimDuru is endorsing that particular site as safe for the older Skype download. But in general, are there APK download sites that are considered "safe" to download, in other words they check the APKs against viruses etc.

Also, so how do I install the Skype APK?

Those I see mentioned the most are AndroidDrawer and F-Droid. The latter says they scan apps for malware/adware/sniffer components: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-Droid. The former has a pretty public presence on the web: FB, Twitter... That's where you can look for problems with the site.
Is that the same level of security you get from the Play Store? I doubt it.
Is it safe to download apps from there? In most cases probably yes, you just got to be smart about it. Android always shows you the permissions an app is asking for when installing it. Read that stuff and ask yourself why it needs permission to access a, b and c (a picture editing app that asks for permission to your contacts, phone records, wifi etc should make you wonder whereas the same app asking for permission to read/write to your storage makes sense).

Anyway, I doubt that older versions of Skype would be a big target for hackers. They go for the popular freeware apps, games and bootlegged games especially...
If you're worried about security you can:
    a) find an alternative app in the Play Store that does the same and works on your Android version
    b) do a Google search with the apps name, version and the download site - look for trouble reports
    c) nandroid your current installation. If you suspect you caught some malware just wipe the entire system and restore the nandroid
Personally I think that just paying attention to the permissions asked during installation eliminates 95% of potential malware.....
I also think that headlines like: "Android now top target for hackers" are a conspiracy of AV companies and others making money of it.... If you do not frequent porn sites and you do not download bootlegged (stolen) versions of media like games, music, videos you're already pretty safe in the Android world...

Still want to install those apks??? Go to Settings > Security and allow 'Unknown Sources".
Download the apk (exract it if it downloads as a zip), search for the apk in your file browser, tap it and the system installer will do the rest. Then uncheck 'Unknown Sources' again.

I am a fan of APK Mirror which is a side project of Artem Russakovskii, editor of Android Police for distributing apks of Google app versions as well as other free apps. I trust it more than most apk sites. Unfortunately, the soup version hosted there only goes back to 5.1 from January since the site is relatively new.

When you enable unknown sources, the first time you install an apk android will ask if you would like it to scan apps being installed for malware and licence checks. This means that it will scan the encryption key and compare it to ones it know and see if it matches the true key for Skype. That way if you are installing a tampered app you will be alerted. Little known feature that most people overlook.

In fact Google publishes statistics on unknown source installations and out of every installation they had tracked, only a very tiny fraction had been flagged as suspicious or malware.
