Internet connection through phone via bluetooth?

    Hi,

I'm a babe in the woods here but I don't see many discussions re connecting to a phone in order to get an internet connection.

I installed Easy Tether but it aborts every time I try to start it. Is ET supposed to be installed on the phone instead of the tablet?

    Can this be done?

    Thanks,

    AB

First what phone are you using??? That could make a world of difference.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Right now I have an old phone (Moto Razr) with AT&T.

But I'm in a position to upgrade. So that becomes an important part of the equation.

I can get a new phone but would like some certainty that it will work.

Well many Motorola smartphones have the ability to bluetooth tether natively. On VZW anyway. Not sure about other carriers. I can with my Droid X. The Droid Bionic can as well and hoping the new Droid RAZR will have the same feature. The great thing about that is the TF accepts bluetooth tethering. It is as easy as pairing and connecting the TF to the phone for internet access.

    Hi,

Doesn't Verizon charge extra for tethering?

    Thanks

That Moto Razr is really old and unlikely to help you much. But it was the hottest thing going when it came out. Just sold my old old old Razr for someone who needed a "world" phone in a hurry.

Yes, Verizon will probably want more money for tethering.

For the easiest way to do it short of blue tooth, look for a phone that says "Mobile AP" in the wireless settings. My Samsung does and a customer who doesn't have that is ready to trade in his phone as of yesterday after seeing mine in action.

I have a rooted Droid X on Verizon, and can tether free of charge. When I tried to tether before it was rooted, there was a horrendous monthly charge for the privilege, not sure, but something like an extra $25 a month!

Bluetooth tethering does not cost extra and is not traceable by a carrier. No root is required. It is built in to the hardware and not disabled by VZW.

So, if I understand, I just need a almost any phone with a data plan and bluetooth.

Then I can make a BT connection to my TF and I'm good to go.

And there is no extra charge for data access via the TF?

    And no rooting is required?

    Is that all correct?

Most of what carriers are looking for with unauthorized tethering is huge spikes in bandwidth. Using it to check email and facebook on a tablet will pretty much go un-noticed.

Just avoid large file downloads and streaming videos when tethered to your phone and you should be fine.
