Open File Manager. Locate your file. It should be in Downloads. Tap the file and you will get a popup message to install the file.

Where did you download it from? Do you trust the source? If so, you need to enable 3rd party apps in settings>manage apps>development>third party sources.
Application should have .apk extension, or it will not be able to install.

Did you download with the market, or another app store, or is it a stand alone file through a browser?

If it is a download you will be prompted to change a setting to allow installs of apps NOT in the Android Market. This is ok if you know the origin of the app is "GOOD". I would suggest that if you are sideloading (what it is called when you install from a file not from the market) that you first make sure you have an Anti-Virus app running on the phone.

This will allow you to check the file content to make sure it is as safe as is possible.

By the way -- For apps downloaded/installed via the Amazon App Store it will sideload as well.

    Hope that helps!
