What to replace, charging port or battery?

    First post

I bought an ASUS Tf101 a few years ago for my wife.
On the first day is would not charge. I decided to return it when it started charging on the second day. So we kept it.
Initially I had to to wiggle with charging port to get it to charge but then we did not have to do it anymore.

About a year later ( my wife used it sparingly during that time), the tablet would not boot. So I gave up on it. But suddenly it started booting up and is working except that it will not hold a charge. Battery status is always "0% - Discharging".

Should I replace the charging port or the battery? FYI, I have bought another complete charger and that did not help.
Is there a way to test the battery or the port pins? I have already opened the tablet and remove the battery.

    Thanks

    Welcome to the forum!
Does it consistently boot when connected to power?
If not, it's probably the port and I don't think you can easily replace it without expert soldering experience...

It always boots up when plugged in now.
As for the port, it is plug and play.
I was thinking that it is the battery but could it be that just that one bad pin in the port is causing the problem?

Now that the battery is out, is there a way to test it/jump start it?

So I decided to open up the battery to maybe force charge with a 5v source. I found that a chip on the IC is burnt. The battery cell linked to it was only giving out 0.5v. The other one was giving 3.4v. So I am buying a new battery.

    Aftermarket batteries any good?

On Ebay, I see that aftermarket batteries for the TF101 sells for about $30 and OEM sells for $50.
Are the aftermarkets batteries any good?

I think I'm at the point where I need to replace the battery in the dock. Are the batteries the same for the dock and the unit itself? I never use just the tablet it is always attached to the keyboard, is that a bad thing? Is that bad for the batteries? Should i let the tablet batteries discharge by themselves? I don't mean to hijack your thread Vanib, but I guess I would like to know if it's worth trying to save the twenty bux or not.
