TF101 powers off after Eee PC splash

    Hello,

I've got an ageing TF101 that a relative has been using. In the interests of clarity, here's the situation:

    • They tell me they haven't dropped the TF101.
    • TF101 was working OK in the days leading up to the start of the problem.
    • They went to take a picture, opened the Camera app and the screen went blank.
    • Pressing the power button results in the TF101 starting to boot, showing the first Eee PC splash and then switching off.

So, what I've tried so far:

    • A straight recovery, holding Volume Down and Power, then pressing Volume Up to try and boot from recovery. When I do this, the TF101 switches off.
    • Holding Volume Down and Power until the ANDROID/WIPE DATA screen appears, selecing ANDROID (Cold Boot). The TF101 switches off.
    • As above, but selecting WIPE DATA. This reports wiping data (a few seconds), tries to boot to recovery, TF101 switches off.
    • Trying the first three above with an SD in the external socket, with the latest WW firmware from ASUS. I've tried this with the original filename, "EP101_SDUPDATE.zip", "E101_SDUPDATE.zip" both with the zip as downloaded and the zip inside the downloaded zip. In all cases, the TF101 switches off.
    • Tried EasyFlash, SBK1 "worked" more comprehensively, appearing to be running through creating partitions and formatting them. SBK2 didn't get anywhere near this (tried both as serial sticker is missing...). NvFlash popped up on the device, but rebooting after running the above resulted in the TF101 switching off after the Eee PC splash.

I'm a bit stuck, after some extensive searching to get all the above done, I don't know where or what else to try, so I'm asking if anyone has any suggestions.

I suspect the unit is an unrecoverable brick, which would be a shame...

    Thanks,
    - Smiffa

I'm wondering if the battery is dead - perhaps try a standard wipe data from the hardware keys while plugged in to the a/c adapter...

Are you talking about holding the volume down button when switching on?

OK, tried with power connected, still the same response. Select "Standard Wipe" then tablet switches off. Same with it in the dock, connect to power.

If it is the battery, then there must be some power there as I can also do the above whilst not connected to the charger (still with the same result).

It's odd, I'm assuming that this has been seen before, but the only way to repair I think would be a return to ASUS, which will be costly as I'm well outside of warranty. I'm open to suggestions but otherwise I think this ones a goner...

I still wonder about the power side of things - you could try trickle charging the battery of the tablet only (while it is powered off). Connect to a powered on, but not sleeping PC USB port & leave it for 8 hours minimum. Then try connecting to the Asus a/c charger for 3-4 hours - it may well power on when you connect to the a/c charger at that point & while it probably won't boot, if you leave it for the 3-4 hours before disconnecting & then try the volume down button when switching on & wipe data you'll have thoroughly ruled out the power question.

If that doesn't work, then I suppose you might try opening up the case to see if anything has come loose or something similar.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas... Perhaps someone else might suggest something...

    All the best
