how to update source code/Eee Pad kernel code?

New here so please be gentle,

I did search and still a bit confused as to how to update the source code/Eee Pad kernel code. I see the different versions on the ASUS Transformer website but not sure how to use the file to update my tablet. I have found lot of reference to firmware update but my understanding is that firmware and source/kernel code are two different things. Also, that the firmware gets pushed out via internet and updated semi-automatically (mine is already at most recent version). I also found lots of reference to rooting, but I have to believe that that is not necessary if just wanting to update the source/kernel code provided at the ASUS Transformer download site. I think I just download the file, extract, place on a microSD card (in root directory) and plug into tablet while on, and I should get a message indicating that an update is available. Is that correct? Sorry guys, I did search for this for quite a while. You are my last hope.

    Thanks

how to update source code/Eee Pad kernel code?

What exactly are you attempting to do? If you are on the latest firmware, you have the latest kernel. The kernel is part of the firmware updates.

The firmware has the kernel inside. If you go to settings>about tablet what is your build number?

Ok, thanks for the replies guys. I did not understand the relationship between the firmware and the source code. My goal is just to make sure the device is running most current versions of operating system files, firmware and such. I will check the build version later tonight when I get home.

    Thanks again guys!

    Edit:

Looks like you are on the most up to date firmware so you don't have anything to update.

yes, thanks again. Although I did research the topic of rooting my tablet along the way and like the idea of at least having a better recovery system. However, this is not my device, it is my wife's, so I have to show some restraint when it comes to monkeying around with it.

The good news - since the TF101 has an unlocked bootloader, there are plenty of tools to help unscrew it if something does go wrong even if you are stock.

does the unlocked bootloader mean I can install a custom recovery without too much difficulty?
