charging tablet and still using a usb?

i want to install this in to my car so i can connect it to a hard drive.

Is it possible to have the tablet charging and still have a usb port?

Also will this tablet accept a external hard drive if so is there a max?

    Thank you

    Welcome to the forum!

If you have the Keyboard dock, it is possible as it has a charging port and 2 USB ports.

If no dock, it technically is possible, but you have to have a microSD to USB adapter like this:

I connect to my Prime keyboard dock 100 GB external drive and it works fine. I use it to transfer pictures during vacation.

thank you for the quick reply

the micro usb is a option but it seams that it would be a bit silly sticking out of the side of my tablet.

is there no way to modify the asus usb adapter to charge as well as allow a usb connection?

or could i install a powered usb hub and and loop the power back in to the tablet but also allowing to charge.

i have a keyboard but i dont want that in the car i was looking to creat a dock so that i can connect the tablet in and have it charing but also syncing it up to the hard drive.

i would assume it possible as the keyboard allows for charging and usb function!

There is probably a way to do it, but here is where the issue lies:

    Getting the 40 pin adapters.

I have seen the pinouts, and I believe the Power input will be different than the actual USB adapter ones.

You could probably get the USB Host adapter, then open it and add a +12 VDC power across the pins for the power, but that is a DIY project with fine soldering work.

I have seen cables that split the power & data out into two ports-- for exactly that sort of thing, to use on smartphones & such.

With the correct set of male-female adapters, it's barely possible you could make it work. However, as Fredico points out, you'll likely need to build your own, here, as Asus uses a USB 3.0 cable in a proprietary way such that it can charge the tablet at 15volts, instead of the standard USB at 5volts.

And putting 15v into your 5v USB hard drive will cook it in a split second, too...

So, even if you did buy an ASUS cable, and opened it up (at the USB end) and then separated out the data from the power? You'd definitely need a device that has it's own power here. Obviously, there are hard drives that have external power-warts, for use on laptops with unpowered USB ports... but then you'd need a portable/car version for your hard drive, in addition to your tablet's....

So, yes-- it's possible. But is is practical? Not really. And highly doubtful you can find a combination of ready-to-go parts that simply plug together to make it work.

And by the time you buy everything, and even if you do manage to get it to work, but if something goes wrong and you do break something-- it's definitely customer-induced-damage, and not covered.

    Best bet?

Buy a dock. That way, you have your cake and can eat it too-- the dock comes with a USB port that is powered and makes connecting a laptop-type (USB powered) hard drive a snap. And your power port is free for you to plug in your Asus car charger into-- a single power device, powering both your tablet and your hard drive...

... in the supporting vendors section of this forum there is a very nice Asus car charger that Just Works.
TF101 B70 series, USA running Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3, rooted. 64gb microSDXC, keyboard dock with 32gb microSDHC in an adapter
Dell Streak 7 running Honeycomb 3.2, rooted. 64gb SDXC. Mainly used as a music player.
Virgin Mobile Optimus Slider, rooted -- frequently used as WiFi hotspot. 16gb microSDHC.
