Screen goes black when turning brightness up

I bought a TF101 on Craigslist yesterday and when I ran it through it's paces before giving the guy money everything looked great. When I got home I updated the firmware (It has ICS on it already but there was an update). Then when showing it to my father-in-law I adjusted the brightness and the screen went black. If you adjust the brightness above 70% the screen goes black but the tablet isn't "dead". If you press the sleep button, then press it again to wake it, the screen flickers for just a fraction of a second then goes black again. Looks to me like a voltage problem and I've read other people having this problem but no solutions. I don't recall seeing the problem when I was testing it out before the update so has anyone experienced this after the latest update?

I called the guy I bought it from back and he's going to try to find the receipt form Best Buy so I can RMA it but he's kinda shifty and didn't seem very happy to hear from me, maybe he knew? Sucky part is that I was actually going to GIVE this to my Father-In-Law because he's a nurse and travels a lot.

Interesting note, if I turn the brightness up to the point the screen goes black, then drag my finger to the left, lowering the brightness as if the tablet was on, I can put the tablet to sleep, tap the power button and the lock screen comes up normally. Besides that the tablet is awesome, it just bums me out that if I give it to him and the brightness auto adjusts to high, the screen goes away, I can't do that to him.

I've tried cold booting, resetting to factory, wiping all data using Volume Down and Power at the same time with the same result. Can anyone help me out? I'm going to call ASUS on Monday but without a receipt I'm not holding out much hope. Thanks.

Since this tablet was manufactured in May of 2011 (B=2011, 5=May) it should still be covered by warranty.

I would call (not email) ASUS Support and see about getting it sent in for warranty. It has a 12 month warranty so it should be covered even if you are not the original owner. You may want to go to the ASUS Support site and try to register it first to see if the original owner ever registered it.

Frederuco, thank you so much for your reply and that information. I'll do exactly that and call them on Monday! I've never messed with Android but honestly, I'm impressed with this tablet. I was happy to give it to my father-in-law, too bad I'll have to send it away first.

Make sure you check as much as you can out so that if you find any more problems you can get them fixed in one RMA.
Such as sound, HDMI, volume, up and down volume buttons, connect to PC/MAC to see the TF file system, all areas of the touch screen, and power on off.

It seems to be an LCD problem. The only thing that will fix it is if you send it back to ASUS. I'm pretty sure they'll replace your TF's LCD with a new one. That what I did when I experienced an LCD problem. Sent it to ASUS for repairs and I got it back after 3 days.

Was yours covered under warranty? I'm wondering because I need to send my refurbished tablet in for the same repair and was wondering what the cost is

Yup but i asked the manager about an estimate of how much will it cost if they'll repair an LCD outside of warranty. She told me that it might be around $190 to $200. LCDs are really expensive. I'm actually thankful that mine was still covered by warranty.

Ok, RMA'd the tablet to ASUS. Just got it back today. It seems to be working just great. After the first 7 CSRs failed to help me at all by hanging up on me or transferring me into oblivion the 8th one got me the RMA. I sent it, they got it, spent a day with it and it got here today.

What makes me nervous is that it is the SAME tablet but it has 4.0.3 Build Number IML74K.US_epad-9.2.1.17-20120312. When I sent it in, it had 9.2.1.21 I believe. It says that there's a firmware update available but I'm afraid to do it. What do you guys think?
