silly question - how do you put the unit to "sleep" and/or "standby" mode(s)?

    Hi,

I just know how to shut down the unit by pressing the bottom on the side. Is there a way to actively put the tablet to "sleep" and/or "standby" mode(s)?

I also have the same question when the tablet is connected to the keyboard.

    THANKS~~~

Hi & welcome to the forum

No question is silly - you ask away.

A quick tap on the power button will turn the screen off & effectively put the tf101 into standbye mode after a few minutes. I have mine set up to turn the wifi off if the screen is off & that works very well from a battery standpoint.

    Good to know! Thanks.

I have a follow-up question. Let's say I am writing an email using the keyboard, i.e., treating the Transformer like a netbook. I am done and I want to put the unit in my bag. Should I FIRST turn off the screen (by tapping the power button) BEFORE I fold the unit? Is this better for the battery??? For my personal laptop, I just fold it and it goes to standby automatically.

    Thanks again~

Technically it should not matter which you do.

Some units do have a glitch that if you turn it off and the close it the screen comes back on. Not an issue if you have a PIN or Lock Pattern as the screen will shut off in about 30 seconds if nothing is entered.

Some users have returned to ASUS for a fix, and they get it back with the same issue. Once the tablet is closed, the lock button does not work to turn the screen on. It may reboot if it is long pressed for 10 seconds, but I have not tried that.

Test out to see if locking then closing turns your screen on and keeps it on. If not, it does not matter which way you do it.

Also, do be aware that even if you have your WiFi set up for "Off when screen off" some apps (like Skype and Talk) may keep the WiFi on constantly, and other apps (like GMail, Email and Market) will check for periodic updates when sleeping. To keep this from happening and get the best battery life I put my device into Airplane Mode when turning it off. The Auto Airplane Mode app by DON is the best for this. Turns on Airplane Mode when the screen is off, re-activates WiFi when the screen is on.

I may try the reboot test with the dock closed now...

EDIT - a long press (15 seconds) of the power button will the dock closed will cause a reboot.
