Hi there, me again.
I'm still using the firmware from last time, as you originally described in this thread (by renaming the downloaded file). It's working fine but it's not updated to ICS. So now I'm looking to update and still get access to Google Play, which this looks like being able to do.
Anyway, just one question here. If I do all the new method above, will I lose all my currently installed apps? Some have been installed via non-market sources.
Also: Thank you!

Correct because you do a factory reset you will lose all installed apps however your files on both the internal storage and the microsd are safe

Thanks Ambey. I'll have to wait until I've a bit of time to sit down and do this then.

Me once more.
I'm trying to do this new way, but having problems with the ADB link to my device (won't see it). Whilst I'm trying to figure that out, would the old way still work? I mean by renaming the WW firmware? (If so, what do I rename it to again? Forgot!)
Thanks.

Hey Chinaren,
I´m into the same situation.....ASUS bought in Shenzhen.....you just download the WW firmware and and rename it to what ?
Thanks.

You need to download the Chinese firmware update and find out what the name of the zip file is inside the download zip file. Then:
Download a western firmware update from the Asus site. eg: the World Wide (WW) one. I assume you could also use the US one, but I didn't try that.
Unzip the zip file that’s inside the main zip file (yes, there’s a zip inside a zip for some reason).
Move this ‘inside’ zip to the microdSD card (root directory).
Rename the ‘inside’ zip to be the same name as the Chinese 'inside zip' version, and then turn the pad off and on. Actually not sure if you even need to do this.
Anyway, the pad should pop up with a little notification in the bottom right area that there's a firmware update detected. Prod that and follow the instructions!
I've done this to upgrade twice now on my olde Asus 101, the second time to upgrade to ICS, and it's worked both times. However I make no guarantees! Also if you do this it doesn't seem to upgrade automatically anymore, but it does have the Google Play market on, which is the main reason I did it. (though unless you use a proxy/VPN the GP market will have many less apps than elsewhere as it detects where you are. There may be a workaround for this, or maybe you could use the US version instead of the WW version, I'm not sure). If you can't get the GP market, try finding the Blackmart market.
