Looking to buy one but have a few newbie questions first

I am planning to buy a non-prime 32GB with keyboard dock this weekend and want to ask a few basic questions before proceeding. I hope you guys will help out a "tablet-virgin". This is going to be my first tablet.

    1) Can I put media files (music, ebooks, videos) without the iTunes-like syncing? Does the Transformer look like an external drive when I plug it in so that I can just drag-and-drop?

    2) Can I transfer files to the tablet over Wi-Fi rather than of using a cable?

    3) With the keyboard dock, I know it has a touchpad but can I plug a USB mouse into the dock and use the mouse instead?

    4) If for whatever reason things don’t work right and I want to restore to factory defaults, is there like a “recovery partition” or something? Or do I download the factory ROMs and follow instructions? If I need the ROM to get back to factory defaults, does it cost anything for the ROM?

    5) Assuming that I have the dock connected, if I plug a USB key into the dock, can you copy files to and from the USB drive to the tablet?

    Thanks guys!

    Yes and Yes

    2) Can I transfer files to the tablet over Wi-Fi rather than of using a cable?
    Yes

    3) With the keyboard dock, I know it has a touchpad but can I plug a USB mouse into the dock and use the mouse instead?
    Yes

Yes you can factory reset easily without th eneed to download a ROM. Only reason to download a ROM is to reset back to stock after Rooting/Custom ROM load.

    5) Assuming that I have the dock connected, if I plug a USB key into the dock, can you copy files to and from the USB drive to the tablet?
    Yes

    Thanks guys!
Done and Done!! Hope this helps.

    Hey welcome to the forums

    1. Yes you can put almost any media file you like onto the TF and have them play back natively (Some videos will require specfic players and codec packs free from the market)
and yes the TF becomes a drive when you connect it to the PC

    2. Yes there are a number of ways to copy files over wifi, I use FTPServer app on the TF and FileZilla on the PC

    3. I don't have a dock right now, someone else should be able to answer this for you, I would assume so.

    4. Yes the TF has a recovery partition which you can access either from within the Settings menu of Honeycomb to reset, or if things have gone bad, you can access by holding a combination of buttons while you power on, then reset from there. (Roms are free from the ASUS site)

    5. Yes USB drives / keys work to copy files to and from using the dock, I managed to have a play with the one I have waiting for my xmas box before it got taken from me again by my gf lol

    Wow...thanks for the quick responses.

I just thought of a couple more questions.

    1) How well does Android play RMVB video files? I assume it's not something that it can do out of the box and I need an app for it?

    2) Does the TF work with Linux Mint? I think the software that comes with it is Windows-based but I am wondering if there are Linux programs that syncs with the Asus TF? I am guessing that if it shows up as an external drive, I can atleast copy files using my Linux laptop to the tablet but will syncing work using another Linux program? This is assuming that the file system used on the tablet is compatible with Linux. I mean Android is Linux in a way.

    Yes with some love

There is some info here: http://www.transformerforums.com/for...referibly.html

Ubuntu is not that different from Mint and should be very similar connect method.

The key is the mtpfs file system.

Look into DVDCatalyst for converting rmvb files maybe they can do them.
I took a quick look and did not see an answer.

Moboplayer on the Android market will play RMVB files natively (- it uses the FFmpeg decoder so in theory should play back any video that VLC Player on other platforms should play subject to not being too high a bit rate). It's not a file format I normally use, but I tried a 1080p sample in high profile format and it was quite jerky. But I'd expect other less demanding variants should play fine.
