Charging the TF via USB 3.0 PC Port

So I just upgraded my motherboard in my PC and have USB 3.0 ports now, I just connected the TF to one of them, enabled AI+ Charger for the USB 3.0 port and nothing.
(AI+ Charger is a technology designed to charge iPads / iPods etc from USB 3.0 @ 3x the usual speed)

Did a little research and it appears the charger cable is not a true USB 3.0 cable, the extra pins in the cable are apparently only for data transfer rate, and to charge it has an extra 12v line from the ASUS Charger.

Quite annoyed about that, ASUS blatantly making it impossible to charge the unit without either hacking a cable to death or buying a new ASUS brick.

(New motherboard is ASUS too would you believe)

Yup. A few of us talked about this a couple months ago.

I do like my new ASUS board but a little disappointed with 3.0 voltage output.

Here is what I think is happening:

I think the Asus charger itself uses the extra pins available under USB 3.0 for determining whether the Asus proprietary cable is plugged in or not and then if detected drive 15 V through the cable rather than the usual 5 V. I think the hardware wiring inside the Tablet on their proprietary connector also makes sure this works.

So if you are using the Asus proprietary cable to connect your TF to a PC which has USB 3.0 connector, the other end of this 'hardware handshake' would probably be missing - so probably even when the USB 3.0 connector on your motherboard can supply 12 V or so, as the hardware handshake did not happen, the PC motherboard would not supply anything other than the standard 5V.

So I think it is the combination of Asus Charger, the Asus Cable and the Tablet itself make it possible that all handshakes happen and Tablet get 15V supply - if you change even one of them, the hardware handshake goes missing.

Um could try taking the charger with u it's not huge, or a second thought wouldn't a second charger be cheaper than a USB 3 upgrade

I'm sure a search before you bought would have provided the needed information.

When I get a few spare pennies, I`ll be investing in a spare charger me thinks - will be good as a spare if this one dies, and gives me a "charger only" RMA option too

I keep my Transformer in a mini messenger bag with my charger brick and cord, a 6' USB 3 extension cable with male and female heads, my stylus, and a 6' mini HDMI cord...so everything I could possibly need, and it still ends up being like 2 lbs of weight to carry in total, so it's not a major deal.
