I bought a 3.0 USB as recommended by people on here. I just wanted to make sure there was no safety issues plugging this from the AC adaptor to the USB port (and does it matter which one?) Or from another computer /airplane USB to my tf USB. I guess I am confused by what the 3.0 v 2.0 USB means and if there is any risk of damage to my tf.

Need not worry. The 3.0 USB cable has additional wires used for charging the TF when used as an extension. The one I use is more substantial then the one Asus supplies. You should not have any issue.

There are no concerns in using the USB 3.0 extension cable to charge your TF from the wall charger, or any other USB port (even on a plane) just keep in mind using anything but the stock charger will yield a painfully slow (~3% per hour with the screen off) charge.

Here is an explanation of USB 2.0 VS. 3.0:

USB 2.0 uses 4 pins as shown here:


USB 3.0 uses 9 pins as shown here:


The TF charger uses some of these additional 5 pins to detect if the device connected is a Transformer. If this IS detected, the charger outputs 15 VDC. If it is NOT detected, the charger will output the standard USB 5 VDC.

Using a USB 2.0 cable will cause the charger to output 5 VDC and a slow charge will ensue and the charger will not show that it is charging.

Using a USB 3.0 cable will allow the charger to detect the TF is connected when using a longer cable.

I wanted to clarify Jeffrey's response a bit.

Using a USB 3..0 cable with the included wall wart charger and cable, the charge time will not be any faster than if you were using the wall wart witht he included charger cable.

If you were to extend the USB cable by using a USB 2.0 cable, the charge time would be between 10-30 hours. Using a USB 3.0 cable to extend the short cable the charge time will be in the 2.5-3 hour range for the tablet.
