Windows, Apple, Android--they're all vulnerable. It is what it is. But, on the plus side it means that Android has become a popular OS

If it is free it is useless.

If you'll do a search on the Marketplace for "malware" you'll find plenty. A familiar name won't hurt but Orpheus is right. Free is generally not so hot.

As Gir commented android is more and more popular and there it comes. Some of the malware is developed by people wanting to steal data/info but some by the providers of the antimalware applications as always.

Security of the applications is one of the android issues vs IOs. Apple has a much stricter control that Google
I have read the report recommended by mangatank and as an additional comment the risks rest not only with non android market applications but even with some of the one in the market. Google does not run a very deep check of the application posted on the market at least for the moment. At this stage they prefer to have as much as possible there and if any issues notified to remove the faulty ones

I have tried some of the exiting applications dealing with the issues but not in position to make any recommendations yet.

Lookout is rated near the top and has a free version. It scans all downloads for malware and viruses.
